Offline Demo Includes Character Creation But Ends Early
Monster Hunter Wilds has released a free demo for its prologue, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, according to a post by Capcom. The demo spans the game’s opening hours, which include character creation and access to all 14 weapons, through Chapter 1-3: To the Forest. Additionally, this is an offline-only demo, meaning online features like multiplayer are disabled.
The prologue demo is available to download now, and players can transfer their save data to the full version upon purchase. Any awards earned in the prologue demo will also carry over to the full game, although Capcom has stated that some trophies will require their conditions to be fulfilled again.
Initial reactions from fans are generally positive for the idea, seeing it as a useful way to onboard newcomers for the upcoming Ascendance expansion arriving in 2027. Fans are also saying that the demo is a smart decision for interested PC players to test the game’s performance without purchasing it, as Capcom has since worked on optimizing the game, which has been a contentious topic since the game’s release.
However, some commenters believe the opening may not present the game at its best, since Wilds’ early game is too heavy on cinematics. While there isn’t a definite decision on the best point for the demo to cut off, fans generally agree that the demo should be a few chapters longer for newcomers to have a better experience.
Wilds' Bundles Cosmetic DLC Library in its Gold Edition
Aside from the free demo, the base game’s digital version has also received a permanent price reduction starting August 4, going down to $39.99 from $69.99. Additionally, Capcom adds a new bundle for the game called Gold Edition for $79.99.
Monster Hunter Wilds Gold Edition includes the base game and 126 items, which include all the available cosmetic DLC packs, as well as other DLC not included in previous packs. These include the Extras Cosmetic DLC Pack, Deluxe Pack, Cosmetic DLC Pack 1-4, Blossomdance DLC Pack, Flamefete DLC Pack, Dreamspell DLC Pack, and the Lumenhym DLC Pack.
Players can also opt to purchase these add-ons separately with the new Cosmetic DLC Collection and Extra Cosmetic DLC Packs. The Gold Edition also includes a Premium Bonus, which includes the Hunter Layered Armor: Wyverian Ears, Premium Bonus Hunter Profile Set, and the BGM: Proof of a Hero (2025 Recording).
The introduction of Gold Edition coincides with the discontinuation of three bundles: Monster Hunter Wilds Deluxe Edition, Monster Hunter Wilds Premium Deluxe Edition, and the Monster Hunter Wilds Cosmetic DLC Pass.
A free demo prologue and permanent price reduction give Capcom a straightforward way to lower the barrier to entry, potentially renewing interest in Monster Hunter Wilds. The move follows director Yuya Tokuda’s previous appeal for players to return and experience the content and improvements added since launch, especially its post-campaign content.
Capcom has extended the lifespan of Monster Hunter World and Rise through the major expansions, Iceborne and Sunbreak, respectively. The demo and repackaging could bring in new and returning players for the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance arriving in 2027.
