Metro 2039 has been officially revealed, with a "First Look" trailer expected to drop this April 16, showcasing what lies ahead for the next chapter of the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter.
The reveal was announced on Metro’s official social media channels, particularly X (Twitter). Not much has been disclosed about this new game yet, but Xbox and even The Game Awards creator, Geoff Keighley, expressed excitement, sharing news of Metro 2039 across their social media platforms.
A few days before its official announcement, rumors about the next Metro game had been circulating online, with insiders claiming that a new Metro title could be revealed at any time. With the announcement confirming its eventual launch and an upcoming trailer, those rumors have now been confirmed
Based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, Metro is an immersive first-person adventure set in an irradiated Moscow following a catastrophic nuclear war. The world is overrun by mutated creatures, and much of the first two games takes place within Russia’s expansive metro tunnels, which serve as fragile sanctuaries from the horrors above.
Metro Fans Weigh in On 2039’s Story
It has been seven years since the last mainline Metro game, Metro Exodus, was released. It was a semi-open-world adventure set a few years after Metro: Last Light with an immersive first-person experience reminiscent of GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Since that major launch, developer 4A Games has remained largely silent, leaving fans with a spin-off VR game titled "Metro: Awakening," developed by a separate studio. Yet even after that, they are already hungry to see the next chapter in the immersive shooter series. Until now, that is.
While not much has been revealed about Metro 2039, fan speculation on Reddit is already running rampant about its direction. Given that Exodus is set in 2035, the upcoming entry likely takes place four years after the train Aurora journeyed across a revitalized Russia. Fans expect the return of Artyom, the lead character from the first three games, while others are hoping for a brand-new protagonist to explore the nuclear wasteland.
As for gameplay, fans are hoping to see a true open-world experience that seamlessly transitions between the metro tunnels and the Russian surface. However, nothing has been confirmed yet, as no official gameplay or story details have been announced.
In the meantime, fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming trailer on April 16.
