Metal Slug devs, SNK, teased something new for the franchise as it celebrates its 30th anniversary with a celebratory video on YouTube and X (Twitter), showcasing the series’ run-and-gun evolution over the years. At the end of the brief one-minute video, a teaser appears showing a pachinko machine with the words "Mission Reboot" on screen.
SNK also dropped a few clues about the alleged new entry in the same video, saying that the series is "Still running, still gunning, with no end in sight." On Metal Slug’s official website, the same teaser text about rebooting the series appears, along with additional details stating that the studio is "reigniting and rebooting the series" as well as exploring "new ventures" in gaming.
Unfortunately, no concrete details were disclosed in this reveal. However, fans are already speculating that this could be a full reboot aimed at reviving the series’ appeal with a modern audience.
One of the biggest theories suggests that SNK could be planning a remake of the first game, similar to how Konami handled its Contra franchise with 2024’s Operation Galuga, which was a modern reimagining of its own run-and-gun series.
Some fans have expressed concern that SNK might return to the mobile market, noting that previous ventures like Metal Slug: Awakening were seen by some as "cash grabs," although others appreciated its more casual appeal on phones. Others hope that SNK might be working on a Metal Slug anime series.
