League of Legends Developer Riot's MMO Development Teased as 'The Grail' by Riot Co-Founder

League of Legends Locke and Vayne
Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill has compared the long-awaited Riot MMO to a quest for "The Grail." Learn what he shared during his PAX West keynote and how fans are reacting.

Riot MMO Update, Execution Challenges, and the Project's Future

Riot Co-Founder Marc Merrill Opens Up About the Ambitious Scale of the Studio's Secret Project

The Riot MMO was a focal point during a retrospective panel at PAX West 2026, where Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill offered a rare update on the studio's highly anticipated, under-wraps project. Highlighting the extreme difficulty of tackling the genre, Marc Merrill revealed that the team uses a dark comedic metaphor for the project’s development, referring to the game internally as "The Grail" a nod to the classic Arthurian legend where knights faced trials to find the sacred cup.

Clarifying that the phrase is an internal studio joke about the grueling workload rather than an in-game feature, Marc Merrill noted, "We jokingly call it 'The Grail' internally because many brave knights are going to die on the Grail quest." Acknowledging that Riot understands players' high hopes and dreams, he stressed that success ultimately comes down to execution.

Despite the sheer difficulty of the genre and the high stakes of meeting player expectations, Marc Merrill expressed strong confidence in the team's execution, stating that the future of the project is "incredibly bright".

Looking Back at the Long and Rocky Road to Runeterra

    League of Legends Demacia

The path to bringing the Runeterra universe into an open-world setting has been anything but straightforward since the project was first casually confirmed back in 2020 by former World of Warcraft lead system designer and Riot’s then-VP and Executive Producer Greg Street. After years of radio silence and a leadership change when Street departed in 2023, Merrill dropped a massive bombshell in 2024 by announcing a complete reset of direction.

At the time, leadership admitted that the initial vision felt too similar to existing market giants like World of Warcraft, prompting the studio to start over, bring in executive producer Fabrice Condominas, and reinforce its ranks with veteran talent. This history of starting over to achieve a true "evolution of the genre" explains why Merrill views the current phase through the lens of a grueling, high-stakes medieval quest.

Fan Base Divided Between Anticipation and Skepticism

    League of Legends Yunara

Marc Merrill's comments quickly circulated across social media platforms like X, sparking a wave of both excitement and skepticism. While many fans were thrilled to get any form of positive update on the Runeterra universe, others voiced caution, especially following Riot's recent decision to wind down development on its fighting game 2XKO less than a year after launch.

Skeptical community members questioned whether Riot has the long-term staying power to sustain an MMO against heavyweights like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV, pointing out the immense pressure riding on the studio's shoulders. Whether Riot can successfully claim "The Grail" remains to be seen, but leadership clearly remains fully committed to the grueling quest.
