Kingdom Hearts 4 D23 Extended Trailer Reveals Coco-Inspired Land of the Dead
Arriving in Late 2027
On August 16th, Kingdom Hearts 4 dropped an extended D23 trailer showing off Quadratum's exploration, a first look at the Coco world, and an official release window. During the panel last August 15th, co-director Tai Yasue and series creator Tetsuya Nomura firmly confirmed a late 2027 release window.
Reflecting on the scale of the project, Nomura shared during the presentation, "We wanted to ensure that transitioning Sora into this new realm of unreality gave players both the familiar magic of the franchise and an entirely uncharted level of freedom in exploration."
The footage showcased a brand-new Pixar world based on Coco, transporting Sora into the Land of the Dead. Sporting skull face paint inspired by Día de los Muertos, Sora teams up with Miguel and Héctor, acquiring a world-specific Coco-themed Keyblade while taking on waves of Heartless.
Splitting the Trio and the Search for Sora
The extended D23 trailer showcases several new story and character perspectives, starting with Sora navigating the urban streets of Quadratum—an expansive, hyper-realistic setting inspired by Tokyo's Shibuya district that serves as the series' new realm of unreality.
Meanwhile, the trailer shifts focus to Donald and Goofy, who are shown seeking clues from Hades, while King Mickey is seen investigating records in a study to find a way to reach Sora across the realms. The trailer officially confirms playable segments for Mickey, Donald and Goofy, marking a major shift where players can directly control the trio in active combat. Most notably, the trailer concludes with a surprise appearance from Riku, showing him gearing up or joining the search to find Sora across the realms.
Fast-Paced Action and Strategic Depth
The extended footage offered a closer look at Kingdom Hearts 4's real-time combat system across different characters. Sora can seamlessly weave physical combos and magic while utilizing brand-new battle features. Different Keyblades grant distinct tactical actions that alter how players approach encounters, pairing classic reaction commands with new traversal mechanics such as using a grappling hook to launch onto buildings and sliding down power lines.
The footage showcases Donald utilizing explosive magical casts and fast-paced spellcasting combos, while Goofy charges into the fray with heavy shield-bash maneuvers, defensive guards, and cooperative party maneuvers that give their combat style a distinct, heavy-hitting feel compared to Sora's nimble parkour agility.
As new information arrives for Kingdom Hearts 4, anticipation is at an all-time high as players await further world reveals ahead of the late 2027 launch.
