Invincible VS’ Story Mode Follows Original Story By Show Creator and Writers
New Trailer and Exclusive Look at Story Mode Gameplay

Invincible VS just announced a single-player Story Mode in a new trailer released on the game’s official social media channels. The new mode presents an original narrative created by the team behind the hit Amazon Prime TV show, on which the game is based, set around season 3 of the show.
"It’s basically like a standalone special episode of the show," said executive producer Mike Willette on an episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, which dropped shortly after the trailer was released on April 24.
The trailer comes just a week ahead of the game's launch this April 30, and gives a sneak peek of the story. The snippets show Invincible and teammates Atom Eve and Rex Splode defending Earth from Omni-Man and his planet-invading Viltrumite comrades, Lucan and Thula.
Battle Beast, a known enemy of the Viltrum Empire in the original show and comics, is also seen fighting on the same side as Viltrumites in a shocking split-second clip. The trailer closes with a shot of Omni-Man and fellow Viltrumites, including Conquest and Anissa, clad in black and orange clothing, dramatically different from their usual white uniforms.

The first few minutes of the new mode’s gameplay went live during an episode of the Official Xbox Podcast hosted by Jeff Rubenstein with special guest, Invincible VS executive producer, Mike Willette (Killer Instinct, Fight on: The Killer Instinct Story).
Story Mode seemingly intersperses cutscenes with 1v1 or 3v3 fights between characters involved in the plot. Exclusive gameplay footage shows Invincible and Omni-Man in a 1v1 fight within a destroyed metropolis, reminiscent of the show’s season 1 ending. However, the story deviates from the show’s plot with the sudden arrival of Viltrumites Lucan and Thula. Invincible’s Teen Team allies, Atom Eve and Rex Splode, later join the fight, thrusting the player into a 3v3 between the Teen Team and the Viltrumites.
Willette didn’t reveal much about the game’s original narrative, only saying that the story’s events are set during season 3 of the show and "could plausibly happen for sure." He explained that some things might be familiar to fans of the show, but will be "different in a very good way." Willette confirmed that show writers Helen Leigh and Mike Rogers penned the game’s original storyline, with involvement from Invincible show creator Robert Kirkman.
Ella Mental Joins the Roster and the Story

Ella Mental, an original character created for the game by comic co-creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, will also appear in Story Mode. However, Willette gave no hints as to what role she would play. Instead, he shared how the roster’s element-controlling character came to be.
According to Willette, Art Director Dan Eder first proposed creating an original character for the game. Kirkman and Walker then enthusiastically provided the concept and sketch for the character. Ella Mental later made her comic book debut in May 2026 in issues 7-12 of Capes by Kirkman and Walker. It is currently unknown if she will make an appearance in future seasons of the TV show.
Unrevealed Year 1 Pass DLC Characters Stay Secret

The trailer also featured a preview of the game’s Year 1 Character Pass DLC inclusions, playable fighters Universa and The Immortal. The DLC was announced last January and is available as a pre-order bonus with the Deluxe Edition, the PS5 Collector’s Edition, or as a separate purchase after launch. When asked about the two unrevealed characters for the DLC, Willette kept them secret, but assured fans will love them.
Art director Dan Eder first revealed that developer Skybound Studios was working with the show’s team on an original story for the game’s single-player mode in June 2025 during an interview at IGN Live. This announcement is a long time coming, dropping just in time after the show’s fourth season wrapped up and shortly after the game’s Open Beta ended.
