Heaven Burns Red's Main Story To End with Chapter 6, But Not Ending Service

Ruka and Yuki

Heaven Burns Red's main story enters its final chapter. Producer Yohei Kakinuma confirmed the story arc conceived 13 years ago is now heading into its sixth and final chapter, while reassuring fans that the game itself will continue afterward.

No EoS In Sight, The Game Continues

Heaven Burns Red's official Japanese X (formerly Twitter) account announced on August 2, 2026, that the game's main story, whose plot was delivered by writer Jun Maeda back on March 19, 2019, has now entered development on its sixth and final chapter. According to Heaven Burns Red Producer Yohei Kakinuma, the story's overall shape was planned as a six-chapter epic from the very start, though how it's been told evolved over the years "through the pursuit of better gameplay and deeper characters."

The announcement was careful to separate the story's ending from the game's lifespan. Kakinuma stated that Heaven Burns Red "will continue" as a live service even after the main story concludes and asked fans not to worry about the game itself coming to an end alongside it. No timeline was given for how long the final chapter will take to release, with him saying only that the team is still determining its format.

The same main story announcement has not been posted on the global X/Twitter account as of writing. Heaven Burns Red's Global server launched in November 2024 with the main story playable up through Chapter 3, per Yostar's pre-registration announcement at the time, and has about a 2-3 year gap in content in comparison to the Japanese server.

Excited but Bittersweet Fan Reactions

Reaction on X has largely been a mix of excitement and bittersweetness. Several fans expressed anticipation for how the story will conclude while acknowledging a sense of sadness at seeing it come to an end, with more than one describing the news as leaving them "excited but a little lonely."

Several responses also centered specifically on writer Jun Maeda, with fans expressing a desire to see his story through to its conclusion alongside the rest of the community, rather than just excitement for the ending itself.

Reddit Fans Are Skeptical the Final Chapter Will Arrive Quickly

On Reddit, discussion has focused less on the ending itself and more on how long it might actually take to get there. Some fans pointed to Maeda's own past comments that he originally wrote the story to run five years from launch, alongside a joke from one of the game's voice actresses during a recent stream that Chapter 6 could take up to another 10 years to finish. Part of that skepticism comes from how HBR's chapters actually release: Chapter 5 alone shipped in three separate parts across roughly two years, leading some fans to point out that a "final chapter" announcement doesn't necessarily mean a quick conclusion.

There's also active speculation about what comes after the main story wraps. Several fans pointed to Wright Flyer Studios' earlier game, Another Eden, which continued releasing new story arcs and protagonists after its own main story concluded, as a likely template, alongside comparisons to how Fate/Grand Order handled its own ending. Others noted that Heaven Burns Red has already teased side content from earlier in its timeline, such as the previously announced Squadron 19-A story, as a possible direction for post-main-story content.

What Is Heaven Burns Red?

Heaven Burns Red is a free-to-play turn-based RPG set on an Earth under attack by extraterrestrial beings known as "Cancer," who have driven humanity to the edge of extinction. Players take the role of Ruka Kayamori, a former band vocalist enlisted into the "Seraph Corps," a unit of soldiers wielding special weapons called Seraphs to fight back.
