Hades 2 Gameplay
Hades 2 is a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which players use magick to take on the sinister Titan of Time. The game builds on several aspects of its action-packed and nearly-endlessly replayable predecessor. Tons of gods and goddesses, both new and returning, boons, weapons, regions, and abilities are all included for the newest iteration of Hades.
New Weapons for Melinoe
However, in contrast to her brother Zagreus, the daughter of Hades utilizes a different set of weapons and a new Magick system where she can cast more powerful versions of her attacks. These attacks, called Omega Moves, can become even more super-powered from any boon bestowed upon Melinoë. However, usage of these Omega Moves consumes Magick, and is limited to how much she has overall. She regenerates after Magick as she entering a new room/location, or through various boons and upgrades received from gods or allies found in her travels.
Arcana Cards and Familiars
Melinoë also has her deck of Arcana Cards at her disposal, allowing her to prepare, pick, and choose among various power-ups before she sets out for the night. Lastly, alongside her shall be her Witch familiars–friendly animals Melinoë meets throughout her travels that accompany her to battle.
Dream Dives
Added alongside Hades II’s PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch is the new "Dream Dives," a game mode that spices up a regular run by randomizing encounters across the game’s seven distinct biomes, each with its own enemies and boss fights.
To unlock this mode, players first need to wake up Hypnos. While this can take a long time, it is endgame content and is only available to players who have mastered most of the main game.
Hades 2 Story Plot
Hades 2 Story
Hades 2 is a direct sequel to the original, where Chronos, the Titan of Time, has usurped Hades and taken control of the Underworld. Melinoë, still only a baby, was luckily saved from the onslaught by the Goddess of Witchcraft and Crossroads, Hecate, as Hades, Persephone, and the previous protagonist Zagreus were taken captive.
Players take on the role of the immortal Princess of the Underworld, Melinoe, an immortal witch and sorceress with powerful magical abilities, a variety of "Nocturnal weapons," and a score to settle with Grandfather Time. Players will explore a bigger, deeper mythical world, where they will gain the full might of Olympus and more to hopefully vanquish the forces of Chronos.
Melinoë, much like her brother Zagreus from the original game, is based on ancient beliefs and tied to the Underworld and the deity, Hades. As with the original Hades, witchcraft is a central theme in Hades 2 and heavily influences the game's narrative. The sequel delves into ancient witchcraft practices and their connection to several Greek myths. Likewise, Hecate, being the goddess of witchcraft in ancient Greek religion and myth, acts as Melinoë's direct mentor.
Hades 2 Setting
Hades II takes place across multiple regions in the fictional realm of Greek mythology, but most of the story sections revolve around the Crossroads, an area nestled between the Underworld and the Surface world.
Throughout the game, Melinoe can explore two distinct routes. The lower path includes the Underworld, Erebus, Fields of Mourning, and Tartarus. Players can also journey to the Surface, starting with the City of Ephyra, then the Rift of Thessaly, and finally the peak area, Mount Olympus, also known as the Summit.
Hades 2 Characters
Melinoe
Melinoe is the main protagonist of Hades 2, taking over Zagreus’ role from the first game. She is the princess of the Underworld and the daughter of Hades and Persephone.
Chronos
Chronos is the main antagonist of Hades 2 and the legendary Titan of Time in Greek mythology. He has seized control of the Underworld, usurping Hades’ throne and disrupting the natural order of the gods.
Hades
Hades is the ruler of the Underworld and the father of Melinoe and Zagreus in Supergiant Games’ Hades series. After being overthrown and banished by Chronos, he remains burdened by his past decisions until he encounters Melinoe again.
Zagreus
Zagreus is Melinoe’s older brother and the main protagonist of Hades. In Hades II, however, his whereabouts remain unknown, though he continues to play an important role in the overall story.
