Danganronpa 2x2 writer Kazutaka Kodaka jokingly confirmed the remake's 2027 delay was to play GTA 6. The Kodaka and Sakakibara pair also detailed the new Slayhem route, revamped character art, and the shift to a full 3D world.

Danganronpa 2x2 Was Delayed to Avoid GTA 6

GTA 6 causes yet another delay with Danganronpa 2x2, as writer Kazutaka Kodaka and producer Shohei Sakakibara addressed the remake's delay to 2027 in an interview with Crunchyroll at Anime Expo 2026.
Sakakibara first cited wanting more development time and avoiding a scheduling clash with "a certain AAA/AAAA title" releasing soon. When asked directly if that title was Grand Theft Auto VI, Kodaka confirmed it with a laugh, joking that he "wouldn't have time to make the game while playing GTA VI,"
The delay also comes as Spike Chunsoft juggles multiple releases at once. Though Kodaka joked about GTA 6 making the delay "inevitable,"Sakakibara pointed to the need for more development time, especially with STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT arriving later this month.
Danganronpa 2 Was Chosen to Avoid Disrupting the Series' Roots

In the same interview, Sakakibara said the team initially considered remaking the first Danganronpa, but felt its premise didn't lend itself well to new scenarios. In a separate interview with Famitsu, Kodaka explained the reasoning further: the team had originally planned to change the first game's story while keeping its world and characters intact, but realized that story was "the root of the Danganronpa games," making any changes to it too disruptive. Remaking the second game instead lets them build something new without unsettling that foundation.
Kodaka added that a Danganronpa 1 or V3 remake isn't off the table, but it depends on how well 2x2 sells first. He also revealed the game's title started as an internal pitch called Danganronpa 2: Take 2, before Spike Chunsoft's own evaluation process landed on 2x2 instead. That same sales-dependent thinking extends to the series' future more broadly: when asked whether a full Danganronpa 4 or more spin-offs like Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls could happen, Sakakibara said the team wants to continue the series, but would like to see how 2x2 performs first.
Slayhem Adds 20% More Content Than the Original Story

2x2's new alternate route, Slayhem, is a fully separate narrative running about "120 percent" the length of the original, according to Kodaka. Sakakibara pegged the "original story mode" at roughly 30 hours, with Slayhem running about 35 hours on its own, driven largely by its sheer amount of added text.
Per Spike Chunsoft's July 3 announcement on their official website, both modes are playable from the very start of the game, so players don't need to finish Original mode first to access Slayhem. Slayhem swaps in entirely different victims, culprits, and tricks once "a certain incident" sets its version of events in motion, rather than remixing the original case with new dialogue, an alternate-universe take on Danganronpa 2's story using the same cast, not a retelling of it.
A Fully 3D World and Reworked Character Art

The duo discussed 2x2's shift away from the original's 2D side-scrolling map to a fully 3D explorable world, a change Sakakibara said was meant to make navigation more intuitive by letting players understand their position at a glance, rather than repeatedly scrolling to figure out where they are. Spike Chunsoft's announcement expands on this: the new map supports both free-roam movement and instant fast travel to any previously discovered location, options the original's side-scrolling format never offered.
Character art has been overhauled too, with Kodaka saying the goal was to make each character's depictions "graphically sufficient" for a modern release, adding that longtime fans will likely notice the differences immediately when comparing them to the original. Spike Chunsoft confirmed new Japanese voice actors for the game's two mascot characters, with Wasabi Mizuta taking over as Monokuma and Kinuta Ooshiro voicing Monomi, though the studio hasn't said why the roles were recast.
Offers a Death Game Experience You Can't Get From The Anime or Manga

When asked what they'd say to Crunchyroll readers who know Danganronpa only through its anime adaptations, Kodaka argued that despite the number of manga, anime, and shows built around the death game genre, Danganronpa 2x2 offers a "game specific depiction of a death game" that can't be replicated in other mediums.
Sakakibara added that since the existing anime adaptation focused mainly on the first game, viewers curious about what happens next can pick up the story through 2x2 itself, which offers two different outcomes: Original mode with the direct retelling of the sequel, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Slayhem with the same story but with an alternate plot.
Danganronpa 2x2 launches in 2027 for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders opened February 10, 2026, alongside the announcement of the limited Psycho Tropical Vacation Package. Stay updated on Kodaka's upcoming detective visual novel by following our article below:
