Grave Seasons Releases First "Everything You Need to Know" Video
Farming Sim With a Dark Twist
Grave Seasons developer Perfect Garbage Studios and publisher Blumhouse Games unveiled an "Everything You Need to Know" video series on YouTube ahead of the indie title’s August 14 launch. Its debut episode, released on May 2, features creative director Louise Blain, who uncovers the cozy town of Ashenridge and the player's role in stopping a serial killer's next murder.
Blain revealed that the game emerged from the team's shared love of management and farming sims, with Perfect Garbage co-founder and creative director Son M. especially passionate about 2001's Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland. The Harvest Moon series stands as a cultural cornerstone of farming sims, having also inspired today's biggest title in the genre, Stardew Valley.
Drawing on the developers' influences, Grave Seasons reflects similar mechanics and day-to-day routines as a regular farming sim: planting crops, foraging, fishing, crafting, and building relationships with the villagers. However, Blain noted that what distinguishes the project is the ever-present countdown to "the next potential murder."
In addition to their farming chores, the player must conduct investigations by talking to the townsfolk and accepting quests. "Here's where that narrative focus really shines," Blain stated. "It's up to you to find out what's stalking the town, and prevent each murder, if you can."
She also clarified that the game does not prescribe a fixed approach to confronting the serial killer during the farmer’s year-long stay in Ashenridge. According to Emmett Nahil, the studio’s co‑founder and narrative director, the world changes regardless of player actions or inaction, leading to surprising consequences.
Features a Romanceable Serial Killer
Like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, Grave Seasons offers multiple romanceable options as well, although this also includes the randomly selected serial killer for each playthrough. Leaning further into its darker tone is the player's background as an ex-convict and their ability to break into homes with a crowbar.
Blending farming simulation with the abovementioned darker elements has made it a much-anticipated release among cozy game fans, especially after its announcement at the Summer Game Fest 2025. Upon opening for wishlisting on Steam in 2024, a Reddit user who enjoyed Ace Attorney, Zero Escape, and farming games commented that the genres were an unlikely pairing. "And I'm 1000% all for it," they added.
Following the success of ConcernedApe's (Eric Barone) Stardew Valley in 2016, the farming-sim and cozy-game space has grown in popularity, with a surge of new releases. Notable titles include Fields of Mistria, Coral Island, Sun Haven, and the upcoming Witchbrook.
"I can't take credit for this, but Stardew, it seems to have inspired a lot more people to consider this kind of game," Barone said in a 2022 interview with PC Gamer. "I think it's cool."
Last March, Grave Seasons received an official launch date of August 14, 2026, for PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. As of now, neither Blumhouse Games nor Perfect Garbage has disclosed when the next "Everything You Need to Know" episodes will be posted on YouTube.
