Gen Atlas is Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Devs' New Game

Gen Atlas is game director Fumito Ueda's next big project. Learn more about what was announced here.

Gen Atlas Announced at Summer Game Fest 2026

From Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Devs

After nearly two years of being known only as Project Robot, game director Fumito Ueda’s next game finally has a name: Gen Atlas. Announced during Summer Game Fest 2026, it is the latest project from Ueda and his team at genDESIGN, the studio behind titles such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.

The game was first teased during The Game Awards 2024 under its aforementioned working title. It was only able to give a brief glimpse into what Ueda’s new world and giant mechanical creatures.

According to the game’s official description on the Epic Games Store, players awaken alone "on an abandoned planet." It is a "vast, silent world" full of "colossal structures" that "stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea." As players explore deeper into the planet, they encounter a colossal robot whose immense power allows access to new locations and reveals more of the world's mysteries.

Many details about the game still remain unknown, but the reveal trailer suggests that Gen Atlas retains several of the design elements fans associate with Ueda’s work. There’s still an emphasis on scaling enormous machines towering over the player character and exploring an unknown world, all in solitude.

At the same time, the trailer also appears to show more direct action than some of Ueda's previous games, including sequences involving shooting robotic creatures and directly fighting large colossi.

In a statement released alongside the announcement, Ueda thanked fans for their continued patience and support. He said that the team’s goal is to create an experience that inspires "quiet wonder and discovery," a sentiment that reflects the themes found throughout his previous works.

Gen Atlas is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store. No release date or release window has been announced, but for now, at least fans finally have a name to attach to Ueda’s project.
