Gears of War: E-Day Confirms No Battle Pass in Multiplayer Deep Dive

Minigun enemy surrounded by fire

Gears of War: E-Day's Multiplayer Deep Dive confirms nearly every cosmetic can be earned just by playing, no battle pass required. The reveal also detailed the new 12-player Horde Siege mode and 4v4 Versus ahead of the August 6 beta.

Gears of War: E-Day's Multiplayer Deep Dive Confirms No Battle Pass

Horde Siege and Versus Detailed Ahead of the August 6 Beta

Gears of War: E-Day's developer, The Coalition, published a full Multiplayer Developer Overview on July 30, breaking down both of the game's multiplayer modes, Horde Siege and Versus, along with how progression and cosmetics work, and the notable lack of a battle pass.

E-Day is the sixth mainline entry in the series, set 14 years before the original Gears of War, and launches October 6 on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass.

Nearly Everything Can Be Earned by Playing

Profile Customization

The Coalition confirmed E-Day will drop the seasonal progression track the series has used since Gears 5, which ran cosmetic unlocks through a "Tour of Duty" system tied to time-limited seasons. Nearly every cosmetic, including Legendary character skins, is unlockable either directly through challenges, achievements, and a Gears 3-inspired medal system, or indirectly by spending Coins, a currency earned through regular play, with no seasonal track gating access to any of it. A separate premium currency, Iron, can be purchased to acquire items faster, but developers say it won't be used to skip time-limited challenges outright.

Weapon Customization

Weapon customization is also new territory for the series: E-Day marks the first time a mainline Gears game has let players modify their guns directly, from subtle tactical tweaks to functional changes, including the ability to attach a bayonet to the Gnasher.

The only cosmetics that can't be earned through play are Premium Edition content, pay-only charity bundles benefiting Crisis Text Line, a suicide-prevention nonprofit, and a small number of branded partnership items. The most notable of these is a Metallica collaboration, featuring a "Ride the Lightning" Legendary weapon skin set and an equippable instrumental version of "For Whom the Bells Tolls" for the main menu.

Horde Siege: A 12-Player Evolution of Gears' PvE Mode

Players fighting a horde

The new multiplayer Horde Siege expands the series' wave-survival mode to 12 players across three separate COG squads fighting on the same map at once, a first for the series. Each squad deploys with its own mission and can cross paths with the other two, meaning gear or fortifications left behind by an extracted squad can end up helping (or complicating things for) another squad still in the fight.

The beta will feature one map, "Golden Quarter," with three maps planned for launch and more to follow.

Siege classes

Players pick from four classes at launch: Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic, each with its own starting loadout and a unique piece of Tactical Gear on a cooldown. Missions are split into three playlists by length (Blitz, Siege, and the longer Horde mode), with three difficulty tiers, Infantry, Commander, and Allfather, that scale based on class level rather than a flat setting. Death isn't necessarily final either: downed players drop tags that any squad, not just their own, can retrieve and use to revive them at a Supply Cache.

Versus 4v4 Returns With No Weapon Mods

Versus Mode Options

Versus returns as a 4v4 mode where every player starts with identical loadouts and no weapon mods, keeping matches focused on positioning and map control around on-map Power Weapons rather than loadout advantages. Four modes launch alongside the game: Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and the new Crucible mode, which centers on carrying a mobile Power Core into a shifting, shrinking zone.

Six maps ship at launch, and playlists are split between Ranked, with its own skill-based matchmaking and rank progression, and Social, which includes standard 4v4 modes as well as Player vs. Bot options.

Platforms and Editions

Edition Comparison Table

Gears of War: E-Day is confirmed for Xbox Series X/S and PC only, with no PS5 release planned. That marks a reversal from Gears of War: Reloaded, last August's remaster of the original 2006 game, which brought the series to PlayStation for the first time.

Alongside the Standard Edition, the Premium Edition adds up to five days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, the Emergence Omen Weapon Skin, five Seasonal Customization Packs starting with the Emergence Pack at launch, and 1,000 Iron. The $299.99 Collector's Edition includes all Premium Edition content plus physical collectibles, headlined by a 15-inch statue of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. Premium and Collector's Edition owners get to start playing October 1, five days ahead of the Standard Edition's October 6 global release.

Gears of War: E-Day's Open Beta begins August 6, with early access granted to anyone who pre-orders any edition.
