FF14 Reveals Evercold Expansion and Evangelion Crossover Alongside Switch 2 Port

FF14 Evercold Teaser

FF14 Evercold expansion and Evangelion crossover announced for January 2027, with Switch 2 port arriving August 2026. Here’s what fans can expect from the next major expansion and Yoshi-P’s thoughts on a potential single-player FF14 title.

Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 Anaheim Major Announcements

Evercold Arrives January 2027

Final Fantasy 14 Online (FF14) revealed its upcoming major expansion, Evercold, alongside other events and features coming soon. As announced by FF14 Producer and Director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida during FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, California, the next chapter of the highly popular MMORPG is set to launch in January 2027.

This chapter marks the beginning of the "Godless Realms Saga," a brand-new narrative arc following the conclusion of the Hydaelyn-Zodiark story. Players will travel to The Fourth Reflection, a shard of the Source that is being ravaged by an encroaching, magical frost.

New Battle System and Content

FF14 Reborn and Evolved Mode

The Evercold expansion introduces a new battle system that allows players to choose between Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode. Reborn Mode maintains the classic 2-minute burst window and traditional combat complexity, while Evolved Mode offers a streamlined, identity-focused experience with fewer buttons and more distinct role mechanics.

Along with this combat overhaul, the game replaces the Allagan Tomestone (endgame currency) system in favor of a diverse Weekly Activity progression model that rewards gear across various types of content. Furthermore, a major update to the Armory System links item levels partially to the character rather than individual jobs, significantly reducing the grind for players looking to gear up multiple roles simultaneously.

There will also be new cosmetics and customization options available, as well as new gear and crafting recipes. Fans can also expect a plethora of additional content coming, including two new jobs (tank and physical ranged DPS), a level cap increase from 100 to 110, new areas, new threats and dungeons, PvP updates, and so much more.

EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire Teaser

Within the Evercold expansion, a new crossover with the classic anime and manga series Neon Genesis Evangelion has been revealed. Titled EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire, this collaboration will feature a series of alliance raids and serve as a massive celebration of the legendary franchise's 30th anniversary.

The project is a partnership with Studio Khara, the steward of the Evangelion franchise. While Square Enix handles the actual development, Khara is actively supervising the art, modeling, and story to ensure it stays true to the source material.

While the developers have yet to share extensive details, fans anticipate a wealth of in-game rewards. Drawing from previous collaborations with NieR: Automata and Monster Hunter, expectations include character-inspired outfits for Rei, Asuka, and Shinji, potential EVA unit mounts, and FF14-styled arrangements of classic tracks like "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" or "Decisive Battle."

FF14 Will End Services for PS4 in Two Years

FF14 Yoshi-P Two Sign

Rounding out the Evercold expansion reveal, Yoshi-P provided an update on the game’s system requirements, officially announcing that FF14 will end support for the PlayStation 4 in approximately two years. This decision stems from hardware restrictions that limit the game’s future growth, with the director advising players to transition to more modern platforms until patch 8.3.

Over the years, FF14 has amassed various updates, with each patch requiring more storage space and further pushing the PS4’s technical capabilities. "While cooperation with Sony’s wonderful engineers has allowed us to ‘limit break’ a few more times even possible, it will soon be impossible to physically contain all of Final Fantasy 14 on the PlayStation 4 hard drive," Yoshi-P explained.

For those still playing FF14 on the PS4, the director joked that fans still have about two years to save up for a PS5 before the team discontinues support for the console.

Switch 2 Port Coming August 2026

FF14 Switch 2 Port

Closing off the keynote segment of the Fan Festival, Square Enix President and CEO Takashi Kiryu announced the Nintendo Switch 2 port of FF14, set to launch in August 2026. This marks the first time the MMORPG will appear on a Nintendo platform, and the reveal included a live on-stage gameplay demo to showcase its performance.

A one-month free early access period will begin in July to test server stability, followed by the official launch in August. Unlike the PlayStation, PC, and Xbox versions, which share a single subscription, the Switch 2 version requires a separate fee manageable via the game’s official website, though existing players are eligible for a 50% discount on the additional cost.

Full cross-progression is supported, allowing players to use their existing characters across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership is not required to play the game.

A Single Player FF14

FF14 Kefka Boss Battle

Following the Day 1 stage events at the FF14 Fan Festival 2026, the developers hosted a Q&A panel to address player inquiries and provide further insight into the game's future. During the discussion, Yoshi-P was asked about the possibility of the MMORPG becoming a single-player title.

The famed director mentioned that they have considered developing a standalone FF14 solo experience, acknowledging the consistent demand from fans within the community. "There are still a lot of people out there who look at an online Final Fantasy and they say, 'Well, an online Final Fantasy is not a Final Fantasy,'" he stated.

FF14 Yoshi-P wait

While Yoshi-P remains enthusiastic about the prospect of a FF14 single-player project, he acknowledged that such an undertaking is currently unfeasible as the team is fully committed to the ongoing development of the MMORPG.

"I would love to consider making a standalone Final Fantasy 14, but unfortunately, the only team that can potentially make a standalone Final Fantasy, the best kind of standalone Final Fantasy 14, is the current Final Fantasy 14 team. I mean, if we ever retire from Final Fantasy 14 Online, maybe we can do it, like [...] our work after our retirement," the director said.

FF14 Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin Germany

Despite the appeal of a standalone title, a spinoff remains a distant prospect while the MMORPG continues its reign as one of the genre's most popular entries. Further details regarding the Evercold expansion, the Evangelion collaboration, and other upcoming events will be shared during the next Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, Germany, on July 25–26, 2026.

Final Fantasy 14 is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. To stay up-to-date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below.
