Dragon Quest 12 Release Delayed as Game is Remade From Scratch

Dragon Quest XII New Protagonist

Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate becomes Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams in a shocking change of direction, as revealed by Game Director Yosuke Saito and series creator Yuji Horii.

Dragon Quest 12 Moves Forward In New Direction

From The Flames of Fate to Beyond Dreams

Yosuke Saito and Yuji Horii Announcing Big Change in Dragon Quest 12

Dragon Quest XII (Dragon Quest 12) developers reveal that it is being remade from the ground up and will be released as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, a different direction from the originally announced Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.

On the game’s 40th anniversary, Dragon Quest 12 Game Director Yosuke Saito and series creator and game designer Yuji Horii took to a special update video to inform fans of the major change, citing that there has been a reshuffling of teams and that the decision to "move things around and start over from scratch" was made with the idea of achieving "what a mainline DRAGON QUEST game should look like" according to the team and Horii.

With that in mind, Dragon Quest 12 will now take longer to release as the team follows the new direction. "It was a major decision, but I believe it was the right one to ensure the next DRAGON QUEST game will be the one that all you fans of the series will really love," said Saito.

New Story, New Logo

Dragon Quest XII Beyond Dreams New Logo

In line with the massive change, the game also revealed a new logo, a new subtitle (Beyond Dreams), and a new trailer depicting the upcoming game’s world.

From Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, it is now known as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, following a young hero whose dreams are haunted by strange visions. Horii and Saito did not reveal much more than that, aside from the fact that the game had gone in a different direction than the original announcement and that the story will be "fantastic".

It will also feature Akira Toriyama’s characters and Koichi Sugiyama’s music, as all of the Dragon Quest titles before it.

Dragon Quest Monsters 4 Is On Its Way

Even though Dragon Quest fans have to wait a little longer for the next mainline entry, the team has ensured that fans will still be looking forward to something else. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World (or Dragon Quest Monsters 4 in Japan) closed off the update video with a short logo and subtitle reveal alongside its protagonists Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest 5.

Details have yet to be announced, but the game is set to release on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
