Donkey Kong Bananza Finally Wins Japan Game Awards' Excellence Award After 15 Years

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong Bananza was named one of 12 recipients of the Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2026, an honor reserved for the year's standout titles, marking one of the series’ first real wins at the ceremony in roughly 15 years.

Donkey Kong Bananza Wins a Japan Game Awards Excellence Award, Ending a Long Drought

A Long Wait for Recognition on Home Turf

Donkey Kong Bananza Wins Excellence Award

Donkey Kong Bananza was recognized with the Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2026 ceremony, held on September 15 at Hulic Hall Tokyo ahead of Tokyo Game Show. The Award for Excellence is reserved for a select group of standout titles each year. Bananza was one of 12 games recognized in 2026, alongside titles like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Silent Hill f, Ghost of Yōtei, Digimon Story: Time Stranger, Kirby Air Riders, and Resident Evil Requiem, making it a genuine mark of distinction rather than a token nomination.

It's a notable win specifically because it's one of the series’ few real wins at a Japanese awards show in a long time. The last comparable recognition for the franchise traces back to around 2010's Donkey Kong Country Returns, meaning it's been roughly a decade and a half since a Donkey Kong game landed this kind of institutional recognition on home turf.

DK and Pauline

That drought is a little surprising on paper, given how much of a fixture Donkey Kong has been in Nintendo's lineup since 1981. But the years in between tell a clear story: after Country Returns and its 2014 sequel Tropical Freeze, the character mostly went quiet as a headline act. There was no mainline Donkey Kong game between Tropical Freeze and Bananza's 2025 release, an 11-year gap, and before that, DK hadn't starred in an original 3D platformer since Donkey Kong 64 all the way back in 1999. For a character with Donkey Kong's pedigree, that's a long stretch of being a supporting player in Mario Kart and Smash Bros. rather than the lead in his own major release.

Bananza Was Already Cleaning Up Before This

The JGA recognition isn't coming out of nowhere. Donkey Kong Bananza had already swept three of the four Grand Award categories, Engineering, Game Design, and Visual Arts, at July's CEDEC Awards 2026, a ceremony that specifically honors technical achievement in Japanese game development. The judges there singled out the game's voxel-based destruction technology, an evolution of the tech Nintendo previously built for Super Mario Odyssey, for letting players tear apart nearly everything in the environment while still holding a stable 60 FPS on Switch 2.

Bananza also picked up a Best Family Game win at The Game Awards 2025, and was nominated for Game of the Year alongside Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hades II, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, though it ultimately lost the top prize to Clair Obscur.

Why Bananza Broke Through Where Other Recent DK Games Didn't

Part of what makes Bananza's recognition notable is how different an approach it took compared to the Country Returns/Tropical Freeze era. Those games were beloved but conservative by design, 2.5D side-scrollers built by Retro Studios that leaned hard into classic Donkey Kong Country nostalgia rather than reinventing the format. Bananza instead handed the character his first fully 3D platformer in over two decades, developed internally by Nintendo EPD, and paired it with a genuinely new hook: full destructible terrain that lets Donkey Kong smash, dig, and throw his way through environments rather than just running and jumping across them.

That risk paid off commercially too. Bananza has sold 4.52 million copies since its July 2025 launch, making it the second-best-selling game on Switch 2, and it's widely been cited by critics as one of the console's strongest exclusives so far, with most criticism centered narrowly on camera control and occasional frame rate dips rather than anything more fundamental.

Between the CEDEC sweep, the Best Family Game win at The Game Awards, and now an Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards, Bananza has quietly built one of the more decorated award runs of any Donkey Kong game in the franchise's history..
