DCKO Debuts as the New DC Fighter, and It's Not What Fans Want

DCKO poison ivy ready for attack

DCKO has been revealed as the new DC fighting game, but it isn't the Injustice sequel fans have been hoping for. Read more about DCKO, its announcement, and its community reactions.

DCKO Revealed as a Free-to-Play Mobile Tag Fighter

Coming to iOS and Android in 2027

DCKO, a game created by Drop Fake and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is an upcoming free-to-play 2v2 tag fighter set in the DC Universe. The action game was announced on July 20th through press releases and is set to launch on iOS and Android sometime in 2027, with pre-registrations already open on its official website.

The mobile fighter currently has 19 confirmed playables, featuring well-known characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Robin. Other familiar characters also include Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Starfire, Nightwing, Zatanna, Constantine, Blue Beetle, and even Lex Luthor. According to the announcement, this roster isn’t final, as new characters will continue to be revealed monthly going forward.

DCKO’s combat revolves around tap and swipe-based combo strings, throws and techs to counter blocking opponents, and tag-team mechanics that let benched characters assist or combine attacks with the active fighter for more coordinated hits. Apart from online PvP, the game also has single-player PvE content through Story modes and other modes that have yet to be detailed, such as the Rift, Season Missions, and the Arena.

Fans React With Disappointment and Want an Injustice 3 Instead

However, longtime fans of the genre and DC weren’t pleased when the announcement was posted. A recurring theme across YouTube and Reddit threads was renewed hopes for Injustice 3, with many fans expressing that NetherRealm Studios, which hasn't had a new project since 2019's Mortal Kombat 11, should return to the Injustice series instead.

Others disappointedly look to DCKO as further confirmation that a mainline Injustice sequel isn't coming anytime soon. A smaller portion of commenters, on the other hand, did note that the Injustice mobile game series, which has live servers to this day, holds a solid track record, so finding an audience for DCKO seems possible.

Several reactions to the reveal online have leaned skeptical, with a lot of the conversation focused on the game name being read as an unfortunate acronym and jokes comparing it to other recent tag fighters entering the genre, namely, 2XKO. Comments on X (Twitter) said their excitement immediately dropped once they realized it was a mobile-only release rather than a console or PC entry.

Currently the announcement has garnered criticism towards Warner Bros. for investing in a mobile spin-off instead of a more substantial fighting game built around the DC roster. Other details have yet to be revealed about the game, so further information is expected to be released later on. DCKO is a mobile fighter game currently in development for iOS and Android, available for pre-registrations ahead of its 2027 release.
