City of None Revealed by Celeste Co-Creator, Launches in 2027

A large figure looming over the protagonist

City of None is a new platforming adventure from a Celeste co-creator, featuring a wooden protagonist exploring a crumbling metropolis. See what’s been revealed about the metroidvania so far.

City of None Announced as New Game from Celeste Co-Creator

New Metroidvania Adventure Arriving in 2027

City of None has been announced as the next project from Celeste co-creator Noel Berry, developed alongside his brother Liam Berry and published by Extremely OK Games. It was shared on May 1, 2026, across official social media platforms and Liam’s personal blog, where the game’s official website, music, and reveal trailer were also posted. The game is scheduled to launch next year.

According to its Steam page, City of None is set in a collapsing metropolis ruled by greedy Barons, following a wooden-bodied protagonist exploring the ruined city and its five sectors. Players travel between them by train, encountering both hostile creatures and friendly inhabitants, while finding items and upgrades that expand their platforming abilities.

Further details remain limited, though a playlist on their website featuring 18 tracks is already available, which Liam described in a Bluesky post as a "VERY large chunk of the City of None soundtrack." Meanwhile, Noel shared that they will be demoing the game in Kyoto at BitSummit, an annual indie game festival showcasing upcoming titles, running from May 22 to 24, 2026.

According to Liam’s blog post, development is led by Noel, who handles most of the programming, while he focuses on audio, including music, sound, and FMOD implementation. Both are collaborating on the game’s art, narrative, and overall design. The project is built using C# and a custom framework created by Noel called Foster.

An Extremely Okay Reset

City of None will be published by Extremely OK Games, the team behind Celeste and TowerFall. The studio previously announced Earthblade in 2021 as its next project, describing it as a "2D explor-action" game and sharing early concept art and music as part of a "vibe reveal" while development was still taking shape.

The project was later canceled in 2025 following a prolonged development process and internal issues, including a dispute over the IP rights to Celeste that led to a split within the team. In a blog post, Maddy Thorson, who co-founded the studio alongside Noel Berry, said the situation prompted a reassessment of the project, adding that "we have lost our way, and the opportunity to admit defeat." The team also noted that "Celeste's success applied pressure on us to deliver something bigger and better with Earthblade, and that pressure is a large part of why working on it has become so exhausting."

They added that the decision allowed them to "wipe the slate clean and refocus ourselves back to smaller-scale projects," as well as "return to our roots and reclaim some joy in our creative process, and see where that takes us."

City of None is the first game announced by the studio following Earthblade’s cancellation.
