Cairn Gameplay
Survival Rock Climbing
Players will step into the role of Aava, a professional climber who is equipped with the necessary gear she needs to climb Mount Kami. However, the climb is guaranteed to be long, difficult, and often made even more perilous because of the changing weather. Players are guaranteed to run out of resources, so it is up to them to find ways to obtain fresh water, herbs, and vegetation to replenish their stores, all while keeping Aava strong enough to continue her journey.
As a survival rock-climbing simulation, the tiniest decisions will matter during each climb. Players will have to find edges and cracks to hold onto and use as appropriate footholds in real time while taking into account Aava’s own physical limitations. If a position is not stable enough, the player risks a fall that will likely injure Aava.
Finding the Right Path
In Cairn, players have the freedom to choose whichever path suits their capabilities. In order to find the easiest or most challenging path, players will have to study the face of the deadly Mount Kami and chart their own path upward.
For those who want a different experience and a much higher difficulty level, they can play Cairn’s Free Solo Mode, also known as a free climbing mode in which Aava climbs Mount Kami without any gear. Players will have extremely limited resources in this game mode, and one mistake may mean certain death.

In Cairn, players will embark on the ascent of a lifetime as Aava, a professional climber, sets out to conquer Mount Kami, an uncharted summit. Throughout the journey, encounter unexpected allies and learn the stories of those left behind on the ground.
The game explores the heavy cost of ambition, forcing players to decide how much Aveline is willing to sacrifice, from her physical well-being to her very safety, to reach the top. It is a grounded, intimate portrait of a climber’s struggle against both the mountain and her own drive to achieve the impossible.
Cairn Setting
Cairn is set on Mount Kami, a fictional peak that acts as a realistic and punishing vertical antagonist. Players must navigate tactile rock faces and unpredictable elements, shifting from low-altitude crags to treacherous, wind-swept heights.
The environment emphasizes survival and resource management, creating a constant tension between the climber’s obsession and the mountain’s indifferent, high-stakes reality.
Cairn Characters
Aava
Aava is a professional climber driven by a singular, obsessive ambition to conquer Mount Kami, a peak that has never been successfully summited. For her, the climb is not merely an athletic feat but a deeply personal mission that tests the absolute limits of her endurance and sanity.
As the primary protagonist, her story is told through the internal struggle and the grueling physical sacrifices she makes while navigating the mountain's vertical landscape
Marco
Marco is a secondary character and fellow climber who provides a different perspective on the mountain's challenge. Initially appearing in a supporting capacity, he becomes a playable character in the "Deep Water" update, allowing players to experience his own unique approach to climbing.
His presence serves to highlight that while Aveline's journey is a solitary obsession, there are others drawn to the mountain's heights for their own personal reasons.
