Gaming’s "Worst Kept Secret"

A modern reimagining of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag did not come as a surprise to fans, as it has been a frequent subject of leaks and rumors over the past few months. It was only last month that Ubisoft finally confirmed that a remake of Black Flag is indeed real.

Ubisoft also laid out its plans for the franchise’s future in a major company shake-up, indicating that more Assassin’s Creed entries are in development. This includes Black Flag Resynced, alongside long-rumored projects such as Codename Hexe, Codename Invictus, and Codename Jade.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag’s Legacy

Released on October 19, 2013, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is widely considered by fans as one of the strongest entries in the series since Ezio Auditore’s story in Assassin’s Creed II. With a Metacritic score of 88, it earned praise for its compelling cast of anti-hero characters, particularly with protagonist Edward Kenway and the historical figures in the Golden Age of Piracy such as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach.

It was also the first Ubisoft title to fully embrace naval combat, a feature that later appeared in future Assassin’s Creed games such as Odyssey and Valhalla. While no gameplay details have been revealed yet for Resynced’s version, fans are eager to see how it evolves with modern gameplay standards, especially in comparison to Ubisoft’s pirate-themed title Skull and Bones, which featured a more streamlined naval system.

After 13 years, the fan-favorite Assassin’s Creed entry is returning through a modern lens. In the meantime, fans can only wait for the upcoming showcase on April 23.
