Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Hidden Blades Unequippable, For Takedowns Only

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is reworking the iconic Hidden Blade mechanics, sparking debate among the community. Dive into the details of how this classic weapon has changed and what other new features are coming to the remake.

Hidden Blade Mechanics Reworked

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces a significant overhaul to the Hidden Blade mechanics, as the blades are now unequipable and reserved exclusively for stealth assassinations and takedowns. In the recently concluded Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit, Resynced developers answered several community questions.

Earlier this week, Ubisoft officially announced the long-awaited remake of the swash-buckling Assassin’s Creed (AC) title. While the reveal was accompanied by a 20+ minute showcase of Resynced’s gameplay and features, fans still have a plethora of queries about the game.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced hidden blade stealth kill

As most AC followers know, the Hidden Blade is one of the most vital weapons that any assassin from the Brotherhood must have, which is why players are curious how it will work in the Black Flag remake.

According to Ubisoft, Edward Kenway will mainly use his Dual Swords as his primary weapons, and the Hidden Blade will only be relegated to "fatal, contextual (and BLOODY!) takedown[s]" after enemy defenses are broken down. "This makes the Hidden Blade Takedown a critical part of moment-to-moment combat, which was not the case in the original," the developers said.

Throughout many of the series’ early entries, including the Ezio Trilogy and AC IV: Black Flag, the Hidden Blade functioned as a versatile combat weapon beyond its use in stealth. This changed during the "RPG era," when the blades were confined strictly to covert assassinations and cinematic finishers.

Fans were divided over the Hidden Blade overhaul, as many players expressed concern that restricting the blade to stealth would significantly limit combat variety. Furthermore, others worry that removing this mechanic may also decrease kill animations and would present issues in delivering the "Prison Break" mission, where Edward had only his fists and newly acquired Hidden Blades as his weapons.

The Devs Listen!

While a small segment of the community supports the decision, most enthusiasts hope the developers will reconsider integrating the blades into standard combat. This may not be a lost cause, as following the Resynced reveal, fans aired grievances regarding the lack of blood and over-the-top VFX.

Producer Justin Ng was quick to respond on X (Twitter), confirming that blood will be present in the final game at no additional cost. Furthermore, he noted that the team is working to tone down the VFX and audio cues based on player feedback.

Map Size, Kenway’s Fleet, and More

Aside from combat, players were also keen on other features. One of which was the map size, as Ubisoft confirmed that the remake will retain the original’s 16km x 16km area, albeit more dense with new city locations and islands to discover.

The "Kenway’s Fleet" feature is set to return, providing passive income and access to rare rewards. Unlike the original 2013 release, which required a separate mobile app for full functionality, the system is now seamlessly integrated into the game, accessible directly from the Hideout or Edward’s captain’s cabin.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced naval travel

Regarding high-seas navigation, the developers have introduced a new "Pathfinder" option, providing an autopilot feature for the Jackdaw as it traverses the Caribbean. Furthermore, Legendary Ships are confirmed to return and are promised to be "as brutal as ever to fight."

Players will also gain the ability to remap controls for both ground and naval gameplay. Ubisoft has stated that a dedicated deep dive into Resynced’s maritime mechanics is scheduled for later this May.

Other notable reveals include the return of all original side activities and the "Wanted" system, alongside technical updates like ray-tracing support across all graphic modes. While Ubisoft acknowledges the community’s enthusiasm and influx of questions, the studio noted that more details will be shared as the launch date approaches.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Find out more about the upcoming remake in our article below.
