Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Deep Dive Details Revamped Parkour, Stealth, and Combat

Edward jumping between roofs

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced breaks down its revamped gameplay systems and shares new footage for a series of deep dive articles about the remake. These updates will be released continually until the game launches on July 9.

Parkour, Stealth, and Combat Detailed in Deep Dive Series

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will feature smoother parkour mechanics, a stealth system inspired by Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and a more immersive combat experience, according to a May 5 post on the Ubisoft website. The said post is the first in a series of deep dives set to release in the weeks leading up to the remake's much-awaited July 9 launch.

Resynced builds on beloved elements of the 2013 classic, which follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh pirate seeking treasure in the 1700s Caribbean. The upgrades detailed in the article are geared towards making gameplay smoother, more cinematic, and more immersive.

The schedule for these posts is currently unknown, but it has been confirmed that the next installment will include a comprehensive look at naval gameplay.

Smoother Parkour

In response to feedback from playtests, Resynced has made parkour more responsive and fluid, with speed boosts, roll landings, corner swings, and new ziplines. The game will still feature the series’ staple parkour style, which snaps characters onto predetermined paths, but with smoother transitions, improved animations, and more freedom over where to climb up or jump down.

The series’ parkour system has been a subject of debate among gamers for years, and Ubisoft is aware of the discourse. Alexandre Pedneault, lead designer of Assassin’s Creed Unity, acknowledged the challenges that came with revamping such an iconic feature of the game in an interview with IGN back in 2014.

"We really made sure that a player that was used to the franchise could get the hang of the new parkour in minutes," he said, aware that changing anything could mean alienating fans, while not changing anything could mean losing new audiences. "[…] we […] stuck with the age-old design philosophy of ‘easy to play, hard to master.’"

In a 2025 interview, Shadows’ Associate Director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, emphasized the importance of improving parkour and keeping its legacy of being a core feature of the series. "Pay more attention to parkour in future games as its own pillar," he said. "We’re trying to rectify that in post-launch with Shadows and push that narrative internally to say, parkour matters."

Resynced might just be the title that unites fans about parkour, with the new footage of the updated parkour system drawing mostly positive reactions. New fans and long-time players of the series shared their excitement over the improvements on Reddit, where the article was cross-posted by the official Assassin’s Creed Reddit account.

Stealth Mode and Manual Crouching

Meanwhile, the Observe feature introduced in Shadows returns to expand stealth mode. Players can now see, hear, and tag hidden enemies. Quest objectives and clues will also become visible by observing.

In Resynced, Edward can crouch anytime. Black Flag’s original automatic crouching mechanic has been upgraded to the manual crouching system introduced in 2014’s Unity. Crouching is now also less detectable at night.

Combat, Weapons, and Tools

Resynced aims to make combat more engaging with enemies and NPCs that are designed to recognize varied player behavior in real time and react accordingly. Foes will now detect and counter player patterns, encouraging more variance in play style and rotation between moves and weapons.

The remake retains the series’ Takedown combat mechanic, where a player can make foes vulnerable to a deadly finisher. More Takedown methods have been introduced, and environmental elements now play a bigger role in combat.

Edward using pistol in combat

The deep dive concluded with a breakdown of the various tools at Edward’s disposal, including his blowpipe and rope dart. The rapier and the cutlass will also be available weapon types.

However, fans are most excited about the ability to freely pull Edward’s hood on and off and the usability of the pistol-sword, which was only available in the original game as a cosmetic item.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. To stay up to date on the latest news about the game, check out our article below!
