Aniimo Developer Details the Creation of Idyll in Behind-the-Scenes Showcase
Pawprint Studio Explores the Journey From Concept to Reality
Aniimo developer Pawprint Studio has released an official behind-the-scenes documentary, giving players a closer look at the creative endeavor required to bring the upcoming free-to-play, next-gen creature-catching action RPG to life ahead of its September 16th launch.
The showcase highlights the development team's journey of turning abstract concepts into the continent of Idyll. Focusing heavily on world-building and creature design, the documentary emphasizes the studio's goal to make every creature feel integrated into a living environment where players can forge new bonds. Behind-the-scenes clips reveal contributions across different departments, including environment design, character modeling, and animation, with animators noting that each creature features a massive suite of hand-keyframed animations to ensure high fidelity.
Hand-Crafted Creature Animations Take Center Stage

A major highlight of the video is the deep dive into the painstaking effort required to bring the world's wildlife to life. Highlighting the massive scale of production behind the project, Tengfei, a model designer, explained that materials used for Aniimo still follow real-world laws of physics, but are refined, elevated, and reimagined for the game. He stated, "Take the Nimbi for example. A real sheep might have realistic fur or curly wool. But the Nimbi incorporates the characteristics of clouds, so we need to blend wool-like and cloud-like materials."
The development team also noted that creatures are designed around their distinct body features and natural personality traits rather than solely focusing on conventional cuteness. This approach shines through in playful additions like Nimbi, a fluffy teal-peach cloud creature, and Reefish, the quirky aquatic Aniimo with a blobfish-like design. They stand alongside other standout roster entries like Bouldus, the rugged rock-rolling Aniimo; Magmarex, the imposing fiery reptilian brute; and the graceful butterfly Aniimo, Gracewing.

Each and every Aniimo is made with care, down to its unique, handmade animations. Animator Lu Kun shared that "all of them [the animations] are manually keyframed," despite the massive effort it would take. Each individual Aniimo has about at least 100 animations, all tailored to that specific creature—"we never reuse animations across different Aniimo," he clarified.
Ayu, another co-animator, added that the team considered using motion capture for efficiency but ultimately decided against it in favor of creating a fun, imaginative world.
"Why do we put in so much effort? Why spend so much time on things that might seem they're not worth the trouble? There's only one goal: to create this world. To make it feel more alive and authentic. That's a world that truly feels like it's living and breathing," she concluded.
