Travel through time to gather allies and defeat the demon god Balor. Test your tactical prowess in battle as you guide four heroes through their interwoven journeys from the past to the present. Together, you’ll save the future from ruin—or fall trying.

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Gameplay

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave retains most of the series’ iconic strategy RPG gameplay. To be more specific, however, the game will retain most of the nuances and features of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and add a few more on top. Battalions, combat arts, and the like make up the game’s core strategic combat system, with the addition of classic Fire Emblem mechanics. Moreover, the game features a Dungeon system similar to the implementation in Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia, where players will crawl through multiple instanced-based dungeons in search of treasure, enemies to fight, and other valuables.

An Initial Gambit That Needs No Do-Overs

Image

When it comes to the strategy RPG genre, there are only really a few that match up to the titan that is the Fire Emblem franchise. Not many franchises can really say they’ve outlasted multiple console generations. Hell, not many of these existing IPs can even say they survived cancellation, which was honestly a miracle, considering how deep the series had dug itself into a hole before the release of Awakening for the 3DS.

And yet, here we are with Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the 18th mainline release of the series.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is a game that knows its strengths and reinvents itself by improving on gameplay mechanics from previous titles, creating a more cohesive, more engaging experience. Honestly, it feels like a title that’s the culmination of everything great that kept the series alive—from the parallel storytelling of Three Houses, the strong gameplay foundation laid by Awakening, and the remarkable audiovisuals from Engage.

Despite it being fairly early for me to say, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is in a league of its own, and makes a strong case for being the premier must-get exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Weaving a Masterful Tapestry Using Five Different Threads

Image

Fortune’s Weave starts with the world already on the verge of its impending doom from the forces of the demon king Balor. You play as a customizable avatar with the default name of Eshmel, otherwise known as the Herald of the Pale Raven, whose duty is to stop the invasion and save the world from destruction. But this isn’t as easy as just walking up to the king and challenging him to a duel, since Balor has resurrected the dead to form his massive army.

Instead, you will have to travel back in time, exactly 5 years before the invasion begins, during the time of the Heroic Games in the capital of Dagsion. From there, you will alter the fates of four notable warriors who made a name for themselves during the tournament, namely Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda, with the goal of recruiting them to your cause in the fight against the demon King.

The use of time travel is nothing new; in fact, some might say it’s quite overused at this point. But in the context of how Fortune’s Weave builds its world, it uses it remarkably, in the way it sets up plot details that span different time periods. This, of course, refers to the parallel storytelling that keeps the narrative interesting.

Despite the four protagonists having completely different goals and motivations, their stories intertwine in ways that expand the game’s lore, often filling in or adding the details that each route builds up or introduces. In other words, it makes great use of perspective relative to each protagonist.

Let’s take the difference in perception of Bertrand, also known as the "White-Haired Demon", for example. From Cai’s point of view, he is a warrior who was betrayed and wrongfully imprisoned, and he gets to know him as an eventual mentor who teaches him a thing or two about fighting. In contrast, however, Leda only sees him as a target, as he is one of the people responsible for the death of her family. This difference in tone also carries over into how their stories unfold, often depending on why they fight in the Heroic Games.

While I have yet to finish a single route, the narrative of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is well on its way to being a masterclass in worldbuilding and storytelling. The staggering number of characters involved in the story should be overwhelming, but it stays contained because each route highlights only a few at a time. In terms of writing, the setups and potential plot twists have been quite predictable so far, especially in Cai’s route, but I’ll reserve judgment until I've experienced more of the game’s different narratives.

Strategy That Goes Beyond Its Expected Design

Now, let’s move on to the gameplay. To most, it may be considered a very overloaded game because it’s a mishmash of all of the previous modern Fire Emblem titles. Yet it manages to stay right at its tipping point, never overflowing, even with the sheer number of things you can do in the game. To put it simply, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave manages to feel like a modern classic, combining what made the older titles shine with the gameplay features that made the newer titles stand out.

Starting with combat, everything you’d expect from recent Fire Emblem releases is present—weapons that are effective against certain types, the relationship Support system, and even buildcrafting and optimization. However, its exclusive mechanic, Blaze Arts, is what sets it apart from preceding titles, giving players access to more creative offensive strategies at the cost of HP.

Blaze Arts are exclusive skills that can be used by any of the five protagonists (Eshmel, Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda). These skills range from utility skills like Dietrich’s Moving Shadow, which lets him bypass impassable terrain, to pure offensive skills like Theodora’s Earthen Throw, which lets her perform a ranged attack without equipping a ranged weapon.

Image

Though simple to apply, the inclusion of these Blaze Arts emphasizes the game’s strategic aspect. An example of this is at the halfway point of Cai’s story, where you can make full use of his Blaze Arts, which provide wide-area flame coverage, to slowly whittle down a group of enemies before they even get to you. The difficulty slowly ramps up as you progress, wherein the game introduces increasingly complex fights that require you to interact with the map rather than brute-forcing them.

This is apparent in the game’s first act, where maps are mostly straightforward, and the objective is to rout all enemy units. By the halfway point of a protagonist’s story, maps start to be much more intentionally designed to function around specific mechanics you’ll need to play with. Often, objectives evolve from just eliminating the enemy; you’ll need to protect a certain area, stall for x turns, and more. This all comes to a head when fights become much grander in scale, showcasing the classic Fire Emblem level design.

Image

Speaking of "classic" design, they even managed to fit in the dungeon-crawling gameplay loop introduced in Shadows of Valentia, but in a much more meaningful way. The key difference was in how snappy everything feels; dungeons are night and day in that regard. Instead of bogging down the game with even more maps, combat in dungeons is structured like your typical turn-based JRPG.

This makes dungeons feel much more different than your typical Chapter fight. Oddly enough, it makes the loop more enjoyable, since it sort of acts as a break between the actual gameplay.

Free Time Really Gives You Unbridled Freedom

All of this carries over to the game’s actual gameplay loop: Free Time. Between missions, you will be allotted a set number of turns or in-game hours where you can do a fair bit of grinding. Training units’ skills in the Arena, raising Support levels, outfitting your characters with better gear, harvesting and gathering materials, recruiting other characters, doing side quests, exploring dungeons, and fighting random battles—all of these can be done at your own discretion.

It seems overwhelming, and quite frankly, it is. In the game’s first few hours, you might spend a fair bit of time just walking around the open world just to get your bearings, as I did. But the game does a great job of easing you into its systems, slowly introducing you to more and more mechanics as you progress through each character’s story.

I still have to experience a lot more of the game, but the way it gives you the freedom to either optimize everything or automate it is quite surprising. In this case, you can do all of the things I said in the time you’re given, or you can choose to automate these turns instead if you want it quick and easy.

Already a Must-Have Switch 2 Exclusive

Image

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is already shaping up to be the game that every Switch 2 owner must have. I, for one, am already extremely impressed by how the game manages to fulfill its ambitious scope and scale, especially since games nowadays tend to rely on DLC to feel complete. It has the best-looking audiovisuals in the series, an astounding gameplay loop, a compelling story with extremely well-done worldbuilding, and a seemingly endless amount of content to get through. It is a game that I absolutely recommend getting as soon as you can, whether you’re a fan of the series, a fan of the genre, or even a newcomer.
