Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy Closed Beta for PC
20 Hours of Gameplay, New Locations, and New Characters
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy has just launched a closed Beta for all PC players who pre-ordered the game. The Beta includes over twenty hours of gameplay and runs from May 21 until the game’s full release. There are currently no official announcements about Dark Heresy’s launch date.
The Beta can be accessed through a dedicated Steam page with a unique code, which players can find in the Digital Downloads section of the Dark Heresy website. Those who played the game’s closed Alpha in December 2025 must update their game and switch the Steam branch through the Steam Library to access the Beta.
Players’ progress from their Alpha playthrough can be carried over, and content from the Alpha will still be available.
Beta expands character creation, with added choices for Character Portraits, Voices, and Archetypes. Players can now pick their character’s Origins, Squad, Homeworld, and make slight adjustments to their Characteristics.
More cosmetic changes are also available. Players can modify their character’s face model, body type, skintone, and hairstyle. The Beta showcases optional tattoos and physical augmentations, as well.
While Alpha allowed players to explore earlier parts of the game, Beta introduces a new location to be explored. In Beta, players must rub shoulders with nobles and elites at Scintilla’s spires to uncover a mystery at the governor’s palace.
Portions of the Beta are only partially voiced over, although developer Owlcat Games has confirmed that the game will be fully voiced upon full release. Players who would like to experience the new Beta content should immediately head to the Lucid Palace, which can be accessed around an hour into the game, after leaving the location, Bastion Serpentis.
Owlcat Games’ second entry in the Warhammer 40,000 series takes place after the events of their first, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, which launched in December 2023. While players wore the armor of a powerful trader in Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy places them in the humble shoes of an aspiring acolyte.
Set during the Inquisition, Dark Heresy follows the main character as they solve mysteries and assemble a party of trusted companions. The game’s closed Alpha launched to generally positive reviews, with most players enjoying the addition of detective-style gameplay and the character Ra’akhti, the player’s Kroot companion.
A collectible 8-inch Ra’akhti figurine by Games Workshop comes with the game’s $289 USD Collector’s Edition bundle, alongside an artbook, digital novella, and insignia. Owlcat revealed a closer look at the bundle during the Skulls showcase on May 21.
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is currently being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games, and GOG.com.
Rogue Trader 3rd DLC Coming June 11
Owlcat has also announced the official release date for Rogue Trader’s third DLC. The Infinite Museion expansion will drop on June 11, and is available with the Season 2 Pass or as a separate purchase.
In this DLC, players will explore the vault of the Necron Overlord Trazyn the Infinite and choose whether to join or oppose him. Rare artefacts, bionic enhancements, and a new companion can be obtained.
Owlcat’s first foray into the Warhammer 40,000 series debuted to generally positive reviews and surpassed 1 million sales a year post-launch. The first paid DLC for Rogue Trader, titled Void Shadows, was released in September 2024, followed by Lex Imperialis in June 2025. Void Shadows was well-received by fans for its massive lore expansion, while Lex Imperialis was criticized for having significantly less content than the first DLC.
A fourth DLC titled Processional of the Damned is confirmed to launch sometime in July to September to close out the game’s Season 2 Pass expansions. This naval-themed DLC will introduce a new location called the Processional, a graveyard of ships where players can find treasure, uncover a mystery, and meet a new companion through new gameplay mechanics.
