This Week (Sept 20 - Sept 26) |
A bit of everything in gaming this week, from Silver Palace’s newest NDA-required technical test opening recruitments, to new content from Persona 4 Revival and Hytale, the latter of which has a shiny $15k prize for those interested. A “niche” game by the name of Dressmaker has made headlines for soaring above Diablo 4 and others on the Steam Top Sellers chart for a moment, and the RE movie has brought in a whole new audience of first-timers and perhaps a few returners too.
Over on the reviews side, Genshin Impact’s 6th Anniversary Patch, 7.0, brings players at the end of the Archons line in Snezhnaya, a region long mentioned back in 1.0 and has finally made its appearance. Silent Hill: Townfall also marks a return—classic Silent Hill flair but more modernized and in a whole new location. CONTROL Resonant follows through with the original game, seven years after its conclusion, taking on a fresh, new perspective.
Here’s a quick look at some of the week’s biggest gaming headlines.

Hytale’s Co-Founder Challenges Players and Puts Up a Prize of $15,000 USD

Hytale is set to launch its first major post-launch content update, simply named Chapter 1, on October 12th, and the game’s co-founder, Simon Collins-Laflamme, has already issued a challenge to streamers: defeat the new boss Gobliterator on Hardcore mode, no armor, no potions, no glitches, and it must be streamed live to be truly legitimate.
In terms of content, the full chapter adds tons of new content, such as a new dungeon with a multi-phase boss encounter, a new faction, world event, and more.
Dressmaker Soars to Steam Top Sellers and Grabs TEKKEN Harada’s Attention Too

A “niche” indie dressmaking game aptly titled Dressmaker revealed that they recouped their development cost within 24 hours. In a Steam post on September 22, creator Jonathan Hau-Yoon took the moment to thank everyone who got to play their game and that it’s definitely a milestone to celebrate. The financial breathing room allowed the developers to now focus on more updates to come, including an online challenge mode and mobile and Switch ports.

Review Roundup: Sept 20 to Sept 26
From Snezhnaya, Scotland, and Manhattan With Love

This week takes players on different journeys across different nations, both in real-life (although still fantastical) and in fiction. Genshin Impact closes off its seven Archons with its arrival in the snowy Snezhnaya, Silent Hill: Townfall makes its protagonist Simon return to the depths of St. Amelia, and CONTROL Resonant practically throws Dylan head-first into a world that he doesn’t know anymore after a long coma.
We also travel back to the past a little in Final Fantasy 15 where the Chocobros go on a long adventure in their sleek car while Qliphah in Providence's Shadow chucks players in an anomalous alternate Tokyo. For something a little more familiar and real, BanG Dream! Our Notes has you on that area, with five bands and five storylines to encounter.
Genshin Impact 7.0-7.1 (6th Anniversary)

Genshin Impact celebrated its 6th anniversary this September, and it has finally reached the climax of its Archon saga in Snezhnaya. The seventh nation for the seventh chapter, it continues from the happenings in Nod-Krai and into a new saga.
It still has that longtime appeal even years after, with an intriguing story, as well as new content to explore and discover that add an extra flair to the player’s overall experience. But with six years under its belt and the eternal problem of power-scaling and powercreeping, newer players or players who have not delved into its world for a while may find it a bit more difficult to jump right in.
Silent Hill: Townfall

Silent Hill: Townfall is the newest spin-off title in the long-running Silent Hill series, following protagonist Simon Ordell as he unravels the past of St. Amelia when a mysterious voice beckons him to return to the town to “set things right.”
It’s got its flaws here and there, glaringly in the visuals, combat, and character development departments, but they never fully dampen the overall gameplay experience, which has more pros than cons. A riveting story, engaging puzzles, and an immersive atmosphere all contribute to that signature Silent Hill flair that it centers itself in. A modern take on a classic formula, done right.
CONTROL: Resonant [First Impressions]

CONTROL Resonant is the sequel to the first Control game, taking place seven years after the events of the first and through the eyes of a new protagonist—namely, to Dylan Faden, Jesse Faden’s (Control’s main character) twin brother. He awakens from a coma to a warped Manhattan overridden by alien entities, some familiar, some new. In this whole new world, he tries to uncover the mystery of this strange phenomenon, while also looking for his missing sister.
So far, it’s got the foundations of a solid game, a sequel that has brought things up a notch form the original: bigger, better, faster, even stronger. However, it’s bogged down (early on) from tis technical issues such as a janky lock-on system and unoptimized frames dropping during combat. Nevertheless, there is still much to learn about this new journey with Dylan.
