Stranger Than Heaven TGS 2026 Livestream Reveals Story Introduction and Hunger System
New Survival Mechanics and a Police Chase Shown
SEGA and RGG Studio's TGS 2026 Special Opening Night livestream gave Stranger Than Heaven a new showcase, running through roughly the first 10 minutes of story footage along with some gameplay highlights. The direct opened with a young, starving, and disheveled Makoto Daito, the game's protagonist, on the run from the police in a historic depiction of a 1915 American dockyard.
While walking around before his ultimate encounter with law enforcement at the docks, the stream previewed a hunger mechanic not previously shown or expanded upon at the game's demo run during Gamescom 2026. Denoted by a depleting meter on the lower-left side of the screen, Makoto's hunger was soon sated by half-eaten sweet potato foraged from a nearby trashcan.
This mechanic would be later dignified by Makoto's visit to Kokura, a prefecture in Fukuoka, as he spends his younger years exploring the town, eating udon, and earning his reputation.

Combat also got some attention during the showcase, with a new sequence showing Makoto fending off police officers as they corner him at the docks, and expanding on the limited combat segments shown at Gamescom. In an invested tutorial section featuring an Arkham-style combat system not too unfamiliar from RGG's mainline Yakuza games, Makoto showed off light and heavy attacks, as well as powerful finishers against off-balance enemies.
In addition, new to this version of the game specifically, the livestream confirmed three selectable difficulty modes: Story, Normal, and Hard. As confirmed by Executive Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama during the interview succeeding the sequence, this addition was made in response to initial criticisms of the game's Gamescom 2026 build, which was decidedly much more difficult and closer to Yokoyama's original design.
Stranger Than Heaven launches January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. For more information on the game, check out the article below!
