Creators Received an “Enthusiastic Offer” from the Streaming Giant
Netflix proposed a Stranger Than Heaven live-action adaptation before even knowing the plot, RGG Studio producer Masayoshi Yokoyama revealed during a Special Opening Night Livestream for the Tokyo Game Show on September 16, 2026.
The streaming giant approached Sega with an "enthusiastic offer" for a film based on the game just six months after it was initially announced under the title "Project Century" at The Game Awards in December 2024.
Stranger Than Heaven has since been revealed to be a gritty action-adventure RPG that follows Japanese-American outcast Makoto Daito as he navigates the developing cities and dark underground of five distinct eras in Japan. The story spans fifty years and features a star-studded cast, including Snoop Dogg, Ado, Tori Kelly, and the digital likeness of Tupac Shakur. The live-action adaptation was confirmed by Netflix and Sega on September 14, 2026 as part of a multi-title partnership including a Crazy Taxi live-action comedy adaptation and a new Sonic animated series.
There were no initial plans to make a movie about the game, said Yokoyama. However, the project materialized thanks to the involvement of Toru Nokuhara, a film producer at SEGA who previously worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films, for whom Yokoyama expressed trust and admiration.
Yokoyama concluded the Special Direct by confirming that the Stranger Than Heaven movie will not be an exact remake of the game and will feature a slightly different plot. He urged audiences to treat the two as separate projects and advised everyone to play the game first since it will be released ahead of the live-action adaptation.
