Hunter Arts and Hunter Styles Return in Different Forms

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance introduces a new set of Boosted Actions that expand the movesets of all 14 weapons. Several of these additions recall mechanics from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, including its game-exclusive mechanics called Hunter Arts and Hunter Styles.
The Boost Bracer is the foundation for these new actions. Hunters build up the Boost Gauge through combat before activating Boost, which temporarily enhances certain weapon actions and unlocks additional attacks. Each weapon has its own Boosted Actions, with some expanding existing ones and others adding new attacks to the weapon’s reperoire.

The system has a resemblance to Valor Style from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Valor Style used a gauge that filled during combat before allowing hunters to enter Valor State, which expanded the weapon’s moveset and changed its combat options. Ascendance uses a different system, though the idea of building a gauge before entering a temporary enhanced state provides a clever point of comparison.
Great Sword
Great Sword demonstrates this similarity through its boosted moveset. The weapon gains new Boosted Driver attacks and powerful charged attacks during its Boosted state. Valor Great Sword also received additional attacks and movement options after entering Valor State, which significantly expanded the weapon’s offensive options in Generations Ultimate.
Moreover, the new Drive Charged Slash also bears a visual resemblance to two Great Sword Hunter Arts from Generations Ultimate: Brimstone Slash and Ground Slash. Its animation combines elements that recall the planted stance and powerful forward strike associated with those older attacks.
Charge Blade
Charge Blade has a more specific connection to a Hunter Art from Generations Ultimate. One of its new Boosted Actions produces a large energy blade through the weapon’s phials, which has drawn comparisons to Energy Blade in discussions of the new Charge Blade showcase.
For context, Energy Blade was a Charge Blade Hunter Art introduced in Generations and also appeared in Generations Ultimate. The attack consumed phials to create a large energy blade for a powerful strike. Ascendance’s version of this attack has its own mechanics within the Boost system, yet the combination of stored phials and an oversized energy blade makes it an especially recognizable reference.
Sword and Shield
Sword and Shield recalls Generations Ultimate through its new coating mechanics. Ascendance adds Bladecoating Slash, which applies a coating effect to the weapon as part of the new Boosted Action set. The weapon’s showcase points to the return of the Oil concept associated with Sword and Shield in Generations.
Sword and Shield could use several Oils in Generations, with each Oil providing a different effect to the weapon. Generations Ultimate also featured Chaos Oil, a Sword and Shield Hunter Art that combined the effects of the weapon’s Oils. The new coating system recalls that part of the weapon’s history through the way an applied effect changes subsequent attacks. Bladecoating Slash itself is a new action within Ascendance and does not reproduce the Chaos Oil Hunter Art.
Light Bowgun
Light Bowgun also recalls the Hunting Styles of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. During Boost, the weapon can jump onto monsters and perform aerial shots, while its enhanced evasive options provide a more aggressive way to reposition during combat. The aerial attacks call back to Aerial Style, while the new evasive actions resemble the dodge-based mechanics of Adept Style.
More Connections Could Emerge Before Release

The comparisons above may only be the beginning for Boosted in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. Capcom has now showcased all 14 weapons, though there is still plenty of time before the expansion arrives in 2027 for players to examine the new movesets more closely. As more details emerge and players get their hands on the expansion, further connections between Ascendance and the Hunter Arts and Hunting Styles of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate could come to light.
