Valve Pushes More Steam Controller and Steam Input Fixes

Steam Deck Beta Client players in the Preview and Beta channels now have another update aimed at Steam Controller and Steam Input issues. Valve’s latest patch addresses Steam Controller firmware prompts, Remote Play disconnects, Steam Input styling regressions, gyro behavior, and trackpad touch settings.
The May 14 beta update specifically fixes a rare case in which the Steam Controller welcome dialog could appear during firmware updates. It also fixes non-local Remote Play sessions disconnecting after a short period, as well as an issue where continuous rumble could sometimes break gyro input.
The update is still part of the Preview and Beta channels, which means it is being tested before reaching the stable Steam Deck client. For Steam Deck and Steam Controller users, the main takeaway is that Valve is continuing to address controller-related issues across firmware, input behavior, and Remote Play.
Steam Controller Users Have Reported Puck and Trackpad Issues

The update lands while Steam Deck and Steam Controller users are discussing several controller-related problems online. Some users have reported double inputs when using the Steam Controller with its charging puck, while others have pointed to firmware prompts and trackpad behavior.
In one Steam Deck community thread, a user reported that Steam Controller inputs did not work properly on the Steam Deck while the controller was connected to the puck. The user said button presses could trigger double activations, such as opening and closing menus or causing in-game actions to overlap.
A separate Steam Controller community thread described a similar puck-related double-input issue on Windows 11 and Steam Deck. The poster later said Valve responded to their support ticket, stating the company was investigating the issue, though no further update was available at the time.
Recent Updates Have Focused on Controller Behavior

The May 14 update follows several recent Steam Deck client updates that also touched Steam Controller behavior. A May 11 beta update fixed incorrect Steam Controller grip thresholds, a Steam button chord configuration issue, and doubled input when the Steam Controller was charging on the puck.
That same update also added a way to turn off Track Pad Locking, a behavior that disables a trackpad when the matching joystick is in use or touched. Valve said the feature is meant to prevent accidental touchpad input, but users can now disable it via controller calibration and advanced settings.
Earlier May updates also included fixes for Steam Controller firmware prompts, configuration saving, puck compatibility, and left trackpad touch registration when connected wirelessly.
Trackpad Deadzone Complaints Add More Context

Community discussion has also focused on Steam Controller trackpad behavior. In one Steam Controller thread, a user argued that the controller has an inner-edge deadzone similar to the Steam Deck’s trackpads and said the issue appears to be software-related rather than a hardware problem.
The same thread included a Steam Support response shared by the user, which described the behavior as an intentional design choice meant to prevent swipes from "hooking" back in the opposite direction when a thumb lifts near the inner edge of the trackpad.
That does not mean every reported Steam Controller issue is the same problem. However, it shows why the latest beta update matters to a niche but active group of Steam Deck and Steam Controller users, especially those who rely on gyro, trackpads, Remote Play, and Steam Input customization.
Steam Deck Beta Updates Are Still Being Tested

Since the latest fixes are part of the Steam Deck Preview and Beta channels, users on the stable client may not see every change immediately. Players who want the latest controller fixes may need to opt into beta updates, while those who prefer fewer risks may want to wait for a stable rollout.
For now, Valve has not announced a single comprehensive fix for every Steam Controller issue users are discussing. However, the recent update cycle shows the company has continued adjusting Steam Controller firmware, Steam Input behavior, trackpad settings, gyro support, and Remote Play performance, especially as users report problems involving the charging puck, wireless behavior, trackpad input, and double activations.
The Steam Deck Beta Client update is available now through the Preview and Beta channels. For affected users, it appears to be another step in Valve’s ongoing Steam Controller and Steam Input cleanup rather than a final fix for every reported issue.
