Overwatch is set to update Anran’s visuals following community backlash. Check out what the developers did with the Perfect Prodigy’s redesign and what her English voice actor thinks about the changes.
Overwatch Shares Anran’s New Look
Confident, Determined, Fierce
Overwatch has unveiled Anran’s redesign following public outcry, with the developers wanting their heroes to feel unique but also their visuals to "match their personality". As announced on the game's official X (Twitter) account on April 7, the "Perfect Prodigy" will feature this new aesthetic as soon as the Season 2 update drops.
In the lead-up to the character's February debut, the Overwatch community raised concerns regarding her visuals, with many fans noting that her in-game model felt generic and failed to capture the likeness established in the comics and cinematic trailers. Due to this, Overwatch posted a video on February 10 to address the feedback, promising to make the necessary changes to improve the character.

In the reveal video showcasing the updates the Overwatch team made with Anran unveiled a little over a month later, Game Director Aaron Keller admitted that Anran’s initial design did not land as they had envisioned when she debuted.
"We think she could come across older and that her original version was too innocent and playful. Anran is confident, determined, fierce, and a natural-born leader, and we want her visuals in-game to convey that personality. So we made some adjustments to her face," he said.

The team opted to trade her current "innocent and playful" in-game look for a more sincere, mature design. "We’re really happy with the way these changes turned out, and also that she has a closer resemblance to her brother Wuyang," Keller stated.
The director also commented on the announcement post using his personal account, noting that the changes reflect Anran’s personality. "Personally, I'm encouraged by what the team can accomplish when players advocate for our game," remarked Keller.
Anran Actor Praises Redesign
Following the announcement of Anran’s redesign, the community praised the Overwatch team for heeding their feedback. Anran’s English voice actor, Fareeha, joined the support, thanking the developers for refining the character’s identity to better align with the players' vision.
She was among those who advocated the character’s visual update and even posted a video on X shortly after the character’s debut detailing her specific concerns about the look.
"I think in her comic and the cinematic, there was a precedent set by it. There was an unspoken promise that said ‘we’re going to challenge the beauty standards that are plaguing and ransacking media these days. right? The Ozempic chic, the ‘contour your nose,’ ‘you have no nose,’ ‘the tiniest nose.’ And I think because of that precedent, people feel understandably let down," Fareeha said.

This visual update, along with the debut of a new hero, is set to headline the launch of the hero-shooter’s 2nd season later this month.
Overwatch is available to play for free on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. To stay up-to-date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below.
