Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ single-player story mode will feature over 10 hours of hand-drawn motion comics interspersed with playable battles, developers confirmed. See what else they shared about the game during EVO Japan 2026 earlier in May.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls' "Episode Mode" will chronicle the battle between Earth’s mightiest heroes and The Promoter through motion comics, developers revealed in a recent interview.

The mode will alternate between voice-acted, hand-drawn comic panels and player battles for over 10 hours of gameplay following Marvel heroes and villains as they answer The Promoter’s call for a competition. In teams of four, they must fight each other to decide who among them will challenge The Champion in a final battle that will determine the fate of the planet.

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka and Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazutoshi Sekine sat down with Japanese video game site 4Gamer during the 2026 Evolution Championship Series (EVO) in Japan to talk about Arc System Works’ (ArcSys) upcoming title. Recorded earlier in May, the interview was released on May 12.

According to them, ArcSys aimed for accessibility during development and intended for Tōkon to be understood and enjoyed by everyone, regardless of familiarity with Marvel characters and fighting games. "We decided that a story mode was absolutely necessary for casual players," Yamanaka said.

"The episode mode includes a glossary and a character relationship chart, so even Marvel beginners can understand the background of the characters and world, as well as their relationships, within the game."

Tōkon has even received its own original Earth number from Marvel: Earth-358, separating it from the movies’ primary Earth-616 setting. "The world is self-contained and complete within this game," said Sekine, "You can enjoy it even if you haven’t seen the movies or TV series."

Yamanaka also went into detail about the game’s optional team generation function, which automatically generates a unique team name based on a player’s chosen characters in Arcade Mode. The words used by the generator are not random, he explained, but were manually selected by the developers to ensure that team names reflect and reference specific character traits and dynamics.

In Episode Mode, players will enter combat with pre-determined teams relevant to the story. However, they are free to create their own teams in Arcade Mode, and can choose whether to use the team generation function or create their own team name.

Explores the Origins of 5 Default Teams

Episode Mode will provide origin stories for each of the game’s five default teams. The Unbreakable X-Men, Amazing Guardians, and Fighting Avengers have already been revealed, while two more are yet to be announced, one led by Doctor Doom and another by Ghost Rider. No official reveal dates have been released.

The Unbreakable X-Men roster was announced back in February, with Storm leading Wolverine, Magik, and Danger. Peni Parker was introduced later in March, joining Ms. Marvel and Star-Lord in the Amazing Guardians led by Spider-Man. The Fighting Avengers team, helmed by Captain America and featuring Iron Man, was completed with the addition of Hulk and Shuri’s Black Panther earlier in May.

Fans speculate that Doctor Doom’s team will be announced during the upcoming summer gaming showcase season, which kicks off with the Summer Game Fest on June 5. Carnage and Green Goblin are two of the most popular fan guesses, based on analysis of previously released trailers and Tōkon’s unconventional character picks.

According to Yamanaka, most of ArcSys’ character choices and designs made it to the final lineup. "[Marvel doesn’t] supervise every single design and move and detail. […] There was room for us to think."

Fans Welcome ArcSys' New Approach to Story Mode

Yamanaka and Sekine closed out the interview with a message to the public, sharing that the developers at ArcSys challenged themselves with a new genre, and reiterating that Tokõn can be enjoyed with friends or alone, by fans and non-fans of Marvel and fighting games alike. Eager gamers expressed their excitement for the upcoming release across social media.

Players familiar with ArcSys’ previous titles, specifically the fighting game Guilty Gear Strive, were particularly pleased with the news that playable battles would be incorporated into Tokōn’s story mode. Fans pointed out that this was a welcome change from Guilty Gear’s story mode, which features an animated movie with zero gameplay.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on August 6 for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. Additional characters, costumes, and lobby decorations are available with the Deluxe and Ultimate Edition. To stay up to date on the latest news about the game, check out our article!
