Ghost of Yōtei News

2026

April 18

⚫︎ Patch 1.601 introduces Ghost of Yōtei's Hell Mode boss battle difficulty. The update also delivers further refinements, including the Gear Retirement prestige feature, performance and stability fixes, and various gameplay quality-of-life improvements.

March 9

⚫︎ Patch 1.5 brings Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the game’s online co-op multiplayer mode, where up to four players can join forces to battle monstrous enemies across varied gameplay modes. Developer Sucker Punch insists that the difficulty of its Raid will force players to maximize their team as it "can't be done solo, by duo, or even a trio."

2025

December 6

⚫︎ Ghost of Yotei has released a new update aimed at smoothing out issues affecting its recently added New Game Plus mode. While not a major patch, it addresses several persistent gameplay problems that have frustrated returning players. The fixes should make New Game Plus runs significantly more stable and enjoyable.

October 18

⚫︎ In an interview with Game Informer, co-director Jason Connell and Ian Ryan shared that they are open to a single-player story DLC for protagonist Atsu despite expressing that a large chapter of her life story is done. "I see it as a chapter is done, but she has so much more in front of her," said Ryan, possibly hinting that there will be more to come. Connell added that they are in a position to listen to feedback and see what their audience wants to know. "Certainly we love Atsu, and we think it's a great character. And just like with Jin, if there's rooms to improve it or to bring some new elements to life or clarity for the narrative’s sake and it falls within what is best for Sucker Punch, then we'll certainly take a hard look at that for sure."

September 29

⚫︎ Sucker Punch studio head Brian Fleming recently spoke with UnGeek about Ghost of Yōtei and the series as a whole, emphasizing that the franchise’s identity is inseparable from Japan. For Fleming, a Ghost game only makes sense when it revolves around a katana-wielding warrior set against the country’s history and landscapes. Unlike franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, which reinvent themselves by jumping between cultures and eras, Ghost is rooted in Japan’s samurai and katanas, elements he sees as the very essence of the series.

September 24

⚫︎ Sucker Punch Productions took Ghost of Yōtei a step further with its authentic depiction of historical Japan, so much so that even Japanese people (such as the interviewer) could feel how authentic the experience looks and feels. They also discussed how Ghost of Yōtei's theme color is yellow, which was explained as significant to the protagonist, Atsu, who has endured trials and tribulations of various kinds in her life.

⚫︎ As shown in the one-minute teaser trailer, the land of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) is set to be brought to life through PlayStation 5 technology, featuring stunning 4K graphics, engaging haptic feedback for immersive weapon handling, lightning-fast load speeds, and 3D audio to further immerse players in 1600s Japan.

⚫︎ The One Thousand Blades trailer brings in even more footage of the upcoming game, taking Atsu on her vengeful quest across the land of Edo. She is seen swiftly unleashing her combat prowess against enemies, whether it's under the blooming cherry blossoms in spring or over the icy snow in winter. One thing is for sure: she will do anything to finish her quest for revenge.

⚫︎ Ghost of Yōtei protagonist Atsu is in no way related to its predecessor's main character, Jin Sakai, said Nate Fox, Sucker Punch co-director. With Ghost of Yōtei set 300 years after the first game, the developers have confirmed that the Tsushima samurai will not be making an appearance in the new installment. "It’s 300 years-plus later. Both endings are valid," Fox said in an interview with MinnMax, adding that Atsu would most likely not even have heard of Sakai.

September 9

⚫︎ Developer Sucker Punch revealed that they are still "hungover" from the GTA 6 delay, relieved at not having to go head-to-head with the Rockstar giant in late 2025. On that day, the developers celebrated all night long, so much so that they still feel the lingering high months later.

⚫︎ Ghost of Yōtei showcases Ezo's breathtaking landscapes, giving players a 10-minute glimpse into what they would expect on release.

September 4

⚫︎ Sucker Punch and Sony have released new Ghost of Yōtei gameplay centered on the odachi, a heavy two-handed blade that trades speed for overwhelming strength. Players can unleash leaping horseback strikes that shake the ground, deliver charged spinning attacks that can fell enemies in a single blow, and even use the pommel for quick knockbacks.

July 28

⚫︎ Players have spotted a long-requested quality-of-life feature in Ghost of Yōtei—quick armor loadouts. Discovered by Reddit user 4M33N on the Ghost of Yōtei subreddit, the feature appears in a screenshot from July’s State of Play, showing a side-menu for armor loadouts accessible via the square button.

While Ghost of Tsushima allowed armor switching, it required navigating through menus, which many players found cumbersome. The addition of quick-swapping aims to streamline gameplay and address a common fan request.

July 27

⚫︎ Ghost of Yōtei introduces a new combat system that replaces the stance mechanics of Ghost of Tsushima with a range of distinct weapon types, including the katana, yari, dual swords, kusarigama, and odachi. While each weapon offers advantages against certain enemies, Sucker Punch co-director Nate Fox confirmed in an interview with IGN that players won’t be penalized for sticking to a single weapon.

“The game definitely would like players to learn how to switch weapons when it is appropriate. It is the most efficient way to play,” Fox said, noting that the system supports varied playstyles.

July 24

⚫︎ Sucker Punch has declined to confirm whether Ghost of Yōtei will include a multiplayer mode similar to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. In an interview with IGN, creative director Nate Fox emphasized the studio's commitment to delivering a high-quality single-player experience, stating the team is “very focused” on completing the game ahead of its October 2 release.

July 23

⚫︎ Ghost of Yōtei co-director Nate Fox says the upcoming title will build on lessons learned from Ghost of Tsushima, particularly in addressing criticisms of open-world repetition. In a recent interview, Fox explained that the team is focused on making the world feel more dynamic and player-driven.

One key feature contributing to this is the new Clue Card system, which helps players track branching narrative paths and make meaningful choices. The system is designed to support a more personalized and engaging exploration experience.

July 22

⚫︎ Sucker Punch’s upcoming title, Ghost of Yōtei, will feature a new memory system that allows players to revisit key moments from protagonist Atsu’s past at select points on the map. Revealed during a July 17 interview with Game Informer, directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell credited the PlayStation 5’s advanced hardware for making the feature possible.

July 21

⚫︎ Building on Ghost of Tsushima’s open-world design, Ghost of Yōtei takes exploration even further. In a July 18 interview with GamesRadar+, Sucker Punch directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell cited Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild as gold standards for discovery, saying those titles influenced their approach.

Connell noted that Yōtei continues to push exploration forward, aiming to match—and evolve—the immersive freedom found in those genre-defining games.

July 18

⚫︎ During the July 10 State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei developer Sucker Punch revealed new details about the game, with directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell later discussing the sequel’s evolution in a July 17 interview with VGC. Building on Ghost of Tsushima’s critical success and focus on authenticity and cinematic storytelling, the team now shifts to a new era and protagonist.

July 17

⚫︎ Sucker Punch directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell recently acknowledged the inevitable comparisons between Ghost of Yōtei and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, given their shared setting and AAA status.

While Shadows is set in 1579 in central Japan and has been a strong performer for Ubisoft with an 81 average on OpenCritic, Ghost of Yōtei takes place further north in Hokkaido in 1603. The original Ghost of Tsushima holds a slightly higher score of 84, adding to expectations for its spiritual successor.

July 10

⚫︎ Ghost of Tsushima’s successor, Ghost of Yōtei, will feature a range of cinematic modes that let players tailor the game’s look and sound to match their preferred samurai film experience. Revealed during the July 10th State of Play, the game supports multiple audio-visual presets, including Japanese dialogue with subtitles and film-style visual filters.

“We want playing through Ghost of Yōtei to feel like stepping inside of your favorite classic samurai films,” said creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox.

⚫︎ Unlike Jin Sakai, Ghost of Yōtei’s protagonist Atsu isn’t a samurai or ninja—she’s a mercenary who fights dirty and uses whatever it takes to win. Alongside her katana, Atsu wields five dueling weapons: the katana, spear, kusarigama, odachi, and dual katanas, each with unique upgrade paths. Similar to the stance system in Ghost of Tsushima, different weapons are more effective against specific enemy types. The odachi, for example, is ideal for large foes, while the dual katanas excel against spear-wielding enemies.

⚫︎ The Ghost of Yōtei PS5 Gold Limited Edition Bundle draws from traditional Japanese art, inspired by Sucker Punch’s fictional take on Ezo. Its design channels kintsugi—the practice of repairing broken pottery with gold—symbolizing beauty in imperfection and reflecting Atsu’s journey of resilience and healing.

June 20

⚫︎ In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Sucker Punch Productions co-creative director Nate Fox detailed the research undertaken to authentically portray the Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan’s Hokkaido region—the setting of Ghost of Yōtei. Fox emphasized the studio’s commitment to respectful representation, noting the cultural, linguistic, and traditional distinctions between the Ainu and the Yamato majority.

June 8

⚫︎ The upcoming Ghost of Yōtei, launching October 2 on PlayStation 5, will bring back the franchise’s popular hot spring scenes. The feature’s return was revealed through the game’s ESRB rating, disclosed within the past week.

May 19

⚫︎ Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Yōtei will be set in Ezo, present-day Hokkaido, as the backdrop for protagonist Atsu’s journey. In a May 15 PlayStation Blog post, game director Nate Fox explained that the team chose the island for its striking combination of natural beauty and inherent danger, continuing the series’ tradition of adapting real-life Japanese locations.
