Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Major Feature Adjustments and Removals
Modern-Day Segments Streamlined
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced reimagines the pirate classic by delivering significant visual upgrades and overhauling core features, including streamlined modern-day segments. As revealed during the Worldwide Reveal Showcase on April 23, this version replaces the previous real-world portions with a more cohesive, narrative-driven approach.
In the original 2013 release, players frequently transitioned between the 18th-century Caribbean and a current era corporate setting. As an Abstergo research analyst, they had to navigate the company's offices and engage in corporate espionage to uncover hidden Templar secrets.
However, these sequences are being completely revamped to prioritize Edward Kenway’s maritime journey. AC Head of Content Jean Guesdon explained that while the original contemporary scenes reflected the franchise’s direction in 2013, they required significant updates to align with Ubisoft's modern vision for the series.
Creative Director Paul Fu doubled down on this sentiment: "For Resynced, we have approached it in a way that focuses on Edward’s journey, while still connecting his memories to the Animus. The modern-day rifts in Resynced will feature new moments that focus on Edward’s internal struggles."
No Multiplayer and DLC
While the announcement of Resynced is a major milestone for the franchise, the news is bittersweet for some, as the remake will launch without the original’s multiplayer mode or the Freedom Cry DLC. According to Fu, this was done so that the team could focus exclusively on Edward’s journey and the core pirate experience.
"It is a pure, story-driven adventure, and we are fully focused on Edward’s adventures in the Caribbean. As a result of this focus, we have elected to not have the multiplayer, or the DLC. Resynced is a 2026 take on the original legend, and for those of us who are curious, the original will still be available," he explained.
This means fan-favorite modes like Manhunt and Artifact Assault will not return, and roaming the seas with the Jackdaw will be strictly a solo experience. Furthermore, since Freedom Cry eventually became a standalone title in 2013, it will remain available as its own separate product rather than being integrated into Resynced.
New Story Missions, Characters, and Features
To compensate for the removal of multiplayer and DLC, Ubisoft has added brand-new story missions that were not in the 2013 original, featuring new dialogue recorded by Edward’s original voice actor, Matt Ryan.
The remake will also introduce three new officers that players can recruit: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Dead Man Smith. Each of them will have their own story questlines and offer significant perks for the Jackdaw.
Updated Combat and Stealth Mechanics
In terms of gameplay, Resynced will adopt the latest parkour movements in recent AC titles, such as back ejects and manual jumps, while keeping Edward’s own moveset. Combat will also be more action-oriented and parry-driven, with visceral takedowns and takedown chaining, allowing players to flow between multiple enemies quickly.
Infiltrating enemy territory is now more comprehensive, as Resynced replaces the old stealth system with a dedicated crouch button and an upgraded, tactical version of Eagle Vision known as Observe Mode. Players can also now dive anywhere they want, stealthily approaching docks and ships from the water without needing a specific diving bell spot.
The notoriously difficult eavesdropping and tailing missions have been overhauled to eliminate the "auto-fail" state, letting fans dynamically recover if spotted rather than triggering an instant desynchronization. Instead of restarting from a checkpoint, the enemies now react realistically to Edward's presence, and the action continues.
Naval and World Improvements
With Ubisoft transitioning to their new Anvil Engine, fans can now explore the vast Caribbean seamlessly, as Resynced eliminates loading screens when transitioning between the open sea and major hubs like Havana, Kingston, and Nassau.
The world is also significantly more dynamic thanks to a reactive weather system, as high winds physically displace objects like signs and coconuts. Moreover, severe storms impact the Jackdaw’s physics and force a more tactical approach to naval combat.
Aside from the new officers, players can also enlist either a cat or a monkey as their companion on deck. Lastly, in addition to all the classics, new sea shanties have been added, including new music from the artist Woodkid.
Pre-Orders Now Available
Following the reveal showcase, Ubisoft has opened pre-orders for Resynced, which is available in both Standard ($59.99) and Deluxe ($69.99) Editions. Fans who pre-order either version will receive the exclusive Blackbeard's Crimson Pack, featuring a new costume for Edward, a matching sword, and a pistol.
Meanwhile, the Deluxe Edition features the Master Assassin Character Pack, which delivers an exclusive costume for Edward, a set of swords and pistols, and a trinket with unique perks. It also houses the Master Assassin Naval Pack, comprising a custom sail set, a ship's pet, crew attire, and a matching wheel, figurehead, and hull trim.
The announcement of Resynced has been long-awaited, as the original is still widely regarded as one of the best entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Now that the remake is official, fans are eager to step back into their pirate boots, command the Jackdaw, and belt out sea shanties once more while navigating the perilous waters of the Caribbean.
