Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) Gameplay

Resident Evil Requiem brings together the two horror subgenres that have been present throughout the franchise. With the game split between protagonists Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft, their respective sections will play out differently, though both offer equal length in terms of gameplay and story.
Leon’s half will be more familiar to longtime fans, as it draws inspiration from the series’ two most recent installments, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake. His gameplay is more action-oriented, focusing on taking down infected enemies with high-powered firearms and a powerful new hatchet as a melee weapon.
On the other hand, Grace's gameplay sections will be more akin to Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. This means that her half of the game will lean heavily towards survival horror, with a focus on stealth and avoidance rather than combat.
Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) Reviews
Resident Evil Requiem was lauded upon release by fans and critics alike, praising its stellar visuals, innovative gameplay, and engaging story.
Here at Game8, our Requiem review writer, Allisandra Reyes, described it as a " full-on survival horror and action masterclass," highlighting the immersive environments and rich horror atmosphere. Gameplay was also a bright spot for Reyes, given the game's solid gameplay loop, well-crafted puzzles, and intuitive mechanics.
Tristan Ogilvie at IGN gave the title a glowing review as well. Notably, Ogilvie praised the expert merging of Grace's tense gameplay and Leon's action-oriented section, despite some pacing issues.
Game Informer's Wesley Leblanc gave the game a near-perfect score, even going as far as to say that Requiem was his favorite entry in the franchise.
Over at GameSpot, Phil Hornshaw praised the new additions to the franchise, like Grace's hemolytic injector and Leon's hatchet, but laments the game's over-reliance on past success.
Outside of media outlets, users on Metacritic gave it overwhelming praise, especially for its next-gen graphics, technical performance, and well-executed dual protagonist system.
Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) Characters
Leon Kennedy

Leon Scott Kennedy is one of Resident Evil's most recognizable characters, having starred in multiple entries, most notably Resident Evil 2, 4, and 6. A former Raccoon City Police Department rookie officer, Leon would go on to dedicate his life to fighting bioterrorism worldwide. Just as he did in RE6, Leon currently works for the Division of Security Operations (DSO).
Grace Ashcroft

Sharing the spotlight with Leon is Grace Ashcroft, a brand-new character in the world of Resident Evil. She is an intelligence analyst in the FBI. In Requiem, Grace is assigned to investigate the suspicious death seemingly related to a deadly infectious disease. On this mission, Grace is kidnapped by Victor Gideon and must face both her personal trauma and unfamiliar terrors to survive.
Emily

Emily is a key supporting character in Resident Evil Requiem (RE9). Her role is shrouded in mystery, but she is closely tied to Grace Ashcroft’s origins and the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City. Her backstory and connection to Umbrella hint at deeper secrets that intertwine with the series’ overarching narrative.
Sherry Birkin

Sherry Birkin, a returning character from Resident Evil 2, is one of the few survivors of Raccoon City. She is the daughter of Dr. William and Annette Birkin, Umbrella scientists behind the creation of the T-Virus. In the game, Sherry serves as Leon’s support specialist, providing critical intel and guidance from afar.
Victor Gideon

Dr. Victor Gideon is a former Umbrella Corporation researcher and the antagonist of Resident Evil Requiem. Operating out of a former Umbrella research and treatment facility, Dr. Gideon is dead set on unleashing a virus, named 'Elpis,' upon the world. In the events of Requiem, Gideon assassinates Alyssa Ashcroft and kidnaps her daughter, Grace, 8 years later.
Alyssa Ashcroft

Alyssa Ashcroft is the mother of Grace Ashcroft and is assassinated at the beginning of Requiem. She made her first appearance in the franchise in 2003's Resident Evil Outbreak, being one of the playable characters. She is a reporter whose investigation into Victor Gideon's operation in Raccoon City led to her eventual murder.

Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) Trivia
⚫︎ Alyssa Ashcroft, Grace's mother, is a returning character. She was one of the playable characters in Resident Evil Outbreak. A lesser-known fact about Alyssa is that she was referenced in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, where players can find a newspaper article written by Ashcroft, revealing that she was investigating the Baker family.
⚫︎ Producer Masato Kumazawa stated that the game’s "Requiem" subtitle references three main themes within the game. The first is Grace’s farewell to her deceased mother. The second is a requiem for Raccoon City and its people. The last is connected to Leon Kennedy, though that connection is currently kept secret.
⚫︎ Notable character easter eggs are found in the game, including the iconic Tofu Survivor that was once playable in Resident Evil 2. This secret character can be seen during the Raccoon City Police Department sections in the game.
