Absolum Overview
Absolum is a fantasy beat ‘em up roguelite by developers Dotemu (Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound), Guard Crush Games (Streets of Rage 4), and Supamonks released on October 9, 2025. Absolum is Dotemu’s first original IP, and it follows a band of outcasts in Talamh, a world split apart by a catastrophic event caused by magic. Absolum tells a tale of resistance where players will battle their way through Talamh to defeat the Sun King Azra.
Absolum features fast-paced beat ‘em up combat with a cast of 4 playable characters, each with their own strengths and specializations. It is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Switch 2 version will release sometime this Q3 2026.

Absolum Gameplay

Players will battle their way through the land of Talamh, ruled by a despot known as the Sun King Azra. The game will take players to different locations of the perilous nation and into stages filled with enemies rushing in to attack simultaneously in true beat ‘em up fashion. And to reach Azra, players will have to take on his forces using any of the following heroes: the greatsword-wielding Galandra, the hardy pugilist Karl, the swift and acrobatic Cider, or the powerful wizard Brome.
As with all roguelites, players can expect to undergo multiple runs. With every area cleared, they can receive different boons and consumable items, but defeat will mean that players will have to start over from the beginning, and with the game’s RNG, every single run will be different.
Absolum Reviews
A Brilliant Combo of Genres

Absolum has consistently received praise for its ability to blend beat ‘em up combat and roguelite mechanics. Gamespot gave it a 9 out of 10 for addictive battles, solid roguelite elements, and the competent execution of an otherwise generic story. IGN holds a similar opinion of how Absolum’s attention to detail in terms of its setting and characters has improved the story. However, they settled on a lower score of 7 out of 10 for its slow start, where players will likely die repeatedly at the beginning without much of the story to anchor the experience and keep runs interesting. The game’s reliance on repetition also caused the score; individual runs aren’t as unique as they expected, and many essential character abilities are hidden behind unlockables.
Reviews on Steam added up to a ‘Very Positive’ rating, with many reviewers praising the game’s art direction, sound, and satisfying combat. Many players have voiced that Absolum’s flaws are mainly due to its roguelite system, with some claiming that runs are lackluster for missing elements, perks, and variation needed to make them transformative.

Absolum Trivia
⚫︎ While the publishers at Dotemu are famous for reviving retro franchises like TMNT and Streets of Rage, Absolum is actually their first original intellectual property.
⚫︎ The developers cited the Sega Saturn classic Guardian Heroes as a major inspiration, specifically for its branching paths and light RPG elements. They also looked to Golden Axe and Dead Cells when designing the combat and roguelite loops.
⚫︎ The score was composed by Gareth Coker (Ori, Halo Infinite), but it features high-profile collaborations with Yuka Kitamura (Elden Ring) and Mick Gordon (DOOM).
