Pokémon Pokopia Surpasses 5 Million Sales Worldwide
Pokémon Sandbox Keeps Soaring After Launch

Pokémon Pokopia has hit a sales milestone of over 5 million players playing the cozy game worldwide. The Pokémon Company confirmed on August 14th that the Nintendo Switch 2 title reached a new height, roughly five months after its debut. The five-million figure combines both physical Game-Key Card sales and digital purchases through the eShop.
The game launched on March 5, 2026. It is Pokémon’s first attempt at a slow-life sandbox format, built through a joint effort between The Pokémon Company, Game Freak, and Koei Tecmo, the last of which brings experience from the Dragon Quest Builders series.
Steady Growth Backed by New Content

This development comes right on the heels of new content hitting the game. A free Version 2.0.0 patch added the move Dive, which came alongside the first paid Expansion Pass chapter, Bubbly Basin that was released last August 5th. The underwater area brought new Pokémon, furniture, and extra customization options on top of the already expanding roster of items.
Two more major updates under the Expansion Pass are also launching. The second chapter, expected in late 2026, will focus on accessories and additional Pokémon, while the third, arriving in 2027, is set to bring another new area along with more content. That ongoing release schedule seems to be a factor in keeping sales active well beyond launch, putting Pokopia among the platform's more consistent long-term sellers alongside titles like Animal Crossing.
Apart from the DLC, Pokopia also ran a limited-time in-game event for the Mythical Pokémon Jirachi. Running from June 23 through July 8, the event had players speak with Jirachi near their Pokémon Center to befriend it and receive a recipe for wish notes. Players had the leisure to interact with other Pokémon and fulfill requests for cute new starry furniture and decor. With small events such as this running throughout, the game is likely to receive other future events over the course of its first year to keep the community engaged.
Fans’ Thoughts on Pokopia So Far

Responses from players have stayed largely favorable since its release. A recurring point is Pokopia's villager behavior, with fans highlighting how each Pokémon uniquely carries its own wants and needs. Many felt that in this aspect, it’s something that Animal Crossing has drifted away from, putting the recent Pokémon title in a better light. With both games’ similarities, the comparisons continued: commenters said they'd like to see that same sense of independence carried into future Animal Crossing releases.
However, some players pointed out that individual Pokémon offer little unique dialogue past their initial introduction and that they tend to bond with the player almost instantly, a complaint that mirrors similar feedback aimed at New Horizons. Still, several fans noted the game's animation work, the number of Pokémon covered, and the overall polish make that limitation easy to forgive. On the other hand, a few people who stopped entertaining the Pokémon series credited Pokopia for pulling them back into the franchise after losing interest in earlier generations.

With Koei Tecmo attached to the project, some have also started imagining Pokopia as the start of a recurring spin-off line, possibly branching into other regions or time periods within the Pokémon world. Nothing official has been confirmed for now, but based on the recent sales, there may be room to keep expanding on the formula.
