Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Mega Evolutions
Mega Evolution and Mega Pokemon are not in the base game, but may return through DLC to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). Read on for more details, as well as how Mega Evolution worked in previous games.

Is Mega Evolution in the Game?

May Return in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC

Pokemon X and Y - Mega Evolutions

Though Mega Evolution has not been featured in the base game, it may return via DLC if online speculation about it being set in Kalos proves correct.

The Paldea Region is based on Spain and Portugal, while Kalos is based on France. The fact that these real-life countries are next to each other has caused fans online to speculate whether Kalos will be connected to Paldea in a future DLC installment.

So with this in mind, we may both see Terastallization and Mega Evolution if players go to Kalos in a potential DLC. We'll leave it to your imagination how this may play out in battles (hint: it would probably be bonkers).

Will There Be DLC?

Mega Evolution was a recurring feature in the mainline Pokemon games since its introduction back in 2013's Pokemon X and Y up until Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon in 2017. But the feature then became absent in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as well as Pokemon Legends Arceus.

Despite this, Mega Evolutions have still popped up in non-mainline Pokemon Games like Pokken Tournament, Pokemon Masters EX, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, and Pokemon Go. It has appeared as recently as earlier this year, with Marnie being shown partnered with a Mega Mawile in Pokemon Masters EX.

It is safe to say that Mega Evolutions have not been completely discarded as a feature in Pokemon games, though only time will tell if it will make a comeback in the mainline titles through a Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC.

Gen 9 Gimmick: Terastal Phenomenon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Eevee Normal Tera Type
Every recent generation has its own unique gimmick. From Mega evolution in Pokemon X and Y, Z-Moves in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing in Pokemon Sword and Shield to Strong and Agile moves in Legends Arceus.

While Sun and Moon included both Z-Moves and Mega Evolutions in the post-game, this trend did not continue into more recent titles.

This generation's gimmick is the Terastal Phenomenon. Once per battle you can Terastallize your Pokemon which will change its typing to its inherent Tera type, of which any of the 18 Types are possible! This will also boost the strength of its STAB moves further in cases where the Tera type and original type are the same.

What is Mega Evolution?

Stat Buff and Ability Change

Pokemon X and Y - Mega Garchomp vs Noivern

Image from Pokemon X and Y

Mega Evolution allows Pokemon to temporarily buff their base stats and change their Ability during battle, while also changing their appearance. Only one Pokemon in your party can Mega Evolve once in each battle and the effect stays until it faints.

Only 46 Pokemon can Mega Evolve and require the corresponding Mega Stone to be held by the Pokemon along with the Key Stone held item obtainable in the story.
